The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
This artifact was created on April 6, 2023. This was a writing activity, the focus was creating a descriptive writing piece. This artifact contains the creativity of the student who wrote a descriptive writing piece on why she loves spring. This artifact was created to support the students thinking, reading and writing as well as building their vocabulary skills. The students were able to express and use the importance of the writing process.
As stated in the indicator 6D, it expresses how student's "understands writing processes and their importance to content learning." (6D). The students were creating pieces that were informative as well as explanatory using facts and details to support why they love spring. The students created and brainstormed a word bank to encourage their creativity in their writing. During this activity, the students demonstrated how the writing process is important. The students during their pre-writing stage where they created their word bank, paired and shared descriptive words. The students worked through each stage, applying skills and strategies to support their learning within this activity. This artifact shows evidence of their writing process, they created on the Ben Q Board a brainstorming list of details of why the student's love spring. The next phase was create a rough draft and revise with the student before creating a good and final copy.
The students were able to demonstrate and use reasons to support the facts and develop points with a concluding statement. The students used their creativity and expression in their writing to meet and apply skills and objectives created for this lesson of descriptive writing. I used an example to model and demonstrate how to create their writing activity. Building steps and providing guidance is essential in creating a positive and successful products. For example, I walked the students one step at a time to ensure they understood how they would complete the final product using the steps of writing. Communication is essential as we teach our students. It is important to build on skills and use these skills to motivate and encourage areas of academics.
This artifact was created on January 30, 2023. This is a lesson plan that was created about Ground Hog Day. This lesson was to teach my students the importance of Ground Hog Day. Students were able to build comprehension and express what Ground Hog Day was. The students were able to learn and make predictions about the Ground Hog and see if Spring or Winter would happen. It was produced to teach students to build their knowledge and schema about Ground Hog Day.
This lesson demonstrated the importance of working with the students to support and motivate their learning. The indicator 6N, expressed "Uses modeling, explanation, practice, and feedback to each students to monitor and apply comprehension strategies independently, appropriate to the content learning;" (6N) I ensured while teaching this lesson, the students understood the importance of why we learned about Ground Hog Day using textual information. The students used reading text given to support and locate information to complete their activities. The students were encouraged to share and express terms they might not have learned about before with one another such as "prediction", therefore supporting their comprehension skills while learning content. I modeled to the students how it is important when looking for information to answer questions, we use the text information given. This artifact met and is supported by the standard as we as teachers are supporting our students learning by creating an environment of which knowledge is communicated and taught. It is important to create an effective process where the teacher will demonstrate to the students how to do a task, what the task means and why it is important to the content they are learning.
This lesson plan taught me as an educator when teaching in the classroom how important it is to model to your students and use the content in an appropriate manner that will teach them using practice and strategies for reading and comprehension. I felt that this also supported their writing skills as they were building on their comprehension strategies. As a teacher it is important to model the information that is being taught so students can begin understanding the importance of the text and or information presented. Using modeling, identifying and working through key vocabulary can support students as they build their comprehension skills and reading strategies.
