Literature Circles are a class activity where a group of students come together-much like a book club- to dive deep into a piece of literature. The discussion is guided by students responses to what they have read. Each student is given a job to to where the examine once specific aspect of the text to help guide the discussion. This allows the to take control of their own learning and interpretation of the text with little to know assistance to no assistance from the teacher.
The roles include:
Discussion Director: it is your job to pose questions that lead to a group discussion about the text.
Literary Luminary: it is your job to read aloud parts of the book to help the group members remember parts that were impactful and why.
Connector: it is your job find parts within the passage that you can connect to from your real world experiences.
Character Captain: it is your job to share observations about the main character(s).
Artistic Adventurer: it is your job to share an artistic representation of the text you are reading (artwork, music, poetry, collage, mobile etc.)
Vocabulary Enricher or Word Wizard: it is your job to look for especially important vocabulary words within the book your class is reading. The words should be: important, unfamiliar, different, puzzling, funny, used in an unfamiliar way, ect.
