Summer Sabbatical or 12th Month Free
The House is open during academic term breaks (unlike the UCB Dorms). You are responsible for the full monthly residential fee regardless of whether or not you go on vacation during the term break.
Concerning the '12th Month Free' policy: Your 12th month of consecutive rent is free. If you move in Sept 1st and then pay 11 consecutive months worth of rent, the next year on August 1st, you would not need to pay rent. You cannot claim '12th Month Free' if you take the 3 month Sabbatical. (This provides an incentive for full year occupancy, but at a cheaper rate; it is equivalent to a ~8.333% discount per month). These policies hopefully work to accommodate both those students who go home during summer break and those who are year-round residents.
Summer Sabbatical constitutes a No-Fee Summer Break: Students may vacate your room for the Academic Summer term for up to three months. You will not be charged any residential fees for a MAXIMUM of 3 months. Your 'No-Fee' summer break is counted 3-months from your Move-out day. IF YOU DO NOT APPLY FOR A SUMMER BREAK YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO CONTINUE TO PAY YOUR MONTHLY RENTAL FEE.
To qualify for No-Fee Summer Break you must:
-- clean your room and clear all personal belongings (you may store them in designated House storage areas). Your Break is counted from the day your room is clear and clean.
-- when you leave: notify the House Parent and fill out the http://hearsthouse.org/checkout form.
-- when you return: notify the House Parent and fill out the http://hearsthouse.org/checkin form.
If you fail to take these steps, you will continue to be charged monthly House Fees for the Summer.
Special cases: Single vs Double Fees
The following policies apply to specific situations as follows:
-- You are in a double room, paying the double rate and your roommate moves out and a new roommate is not available:
You may continue to pay the double rate for up to 3 months. After 3 months, you will need to pay the single rate
-- You applied to the House requesting to double with a roommate and no roommate is available: You are allowed to pay the double rate for 3 months; after that you will need to pay the single rate.
Note: Exceptions to these policies require an appeal to House management.
FEES EFFECTIVE Sept 1, 2025
