Human-Data Interaction Workshop

@ IEEE VIS 2021 on Sunday, October 24, 2021

Interacting with data has become an integral part of many people’s daily lives. Not only working professionals but also lay individuals and data-enthusiasts engage in a broad range of activities that involve data to achieve their goals in work, social, and personal contexts. Yet despite the huge potential in facilitating human-data interaction for more effective, productive, and rewarding experiences, current visualization research focuses on limited aspects of how people interact with data. The emerging area of human-data interaction (HDI) encompasses all aspects where humans touch and engage with data, widening the scope beyond traditional visualization and visual analytics to consider the breadth of how people think with and use data. It also expands the focus on data experts to a wider range of users with varying levels of data and visualization literacy. We need to rethink existing HDI scenarios, envision new scenarios, and to explore ways to support this diversity of users, which in turn brings new challenges and opportunities to visualization and visual analytics researchers.

In this half-day workshop, we aim to understand the broader ecosystem of data activities that humans engage in and explore the roles that visualization can play in that broader spectrum of human-data interaction. Our specific goals include:

  1. Connect researchers and practitioners from multiple disciplines to enhance understanding of how humans work with, play with, understand and think with data;

  2. Expand the understanding of where and how visualization researchers might contribute to and benefit from this larger lens; and

  3. Define the space and the implications for visualization and visual analytics research and design.

The workshop will combine a panel with invited speakers, theme-building activities, and breakout/discussion sessions. Themes will be gleaned from the accepted submissions.
