Week 4 Playful Interactions

"Dance Code" Playful interaction ( Concept)

Dance Code

Is placed in a spacious area where it is possible to have a Kinect camera to follow the 3Dimensional movements of the participants while the floor has inbuild pressure points. Each time the dancer makes a step this data is sent to an API that collects the "energy" levels depending on the number of steps and on the pressure applied to touchpoints in the floor. The data collected from the 3D movements are randomized to create a 3D sculpture created by the second API. The original song of choice, get randomized and adapted according to the fitting parameters that had been matched to the pressure point of the floor. A new song a Digital 3D piece and a project what have you got? Your very own live edited 3D musical dance hologram projected onto the room. The participant can take a picture of the QR Code to get a print of their artistic results. They can take the memory with them as the pictures/QR-code is linked to an AR application such as Artivive which lets them make a scan and relive the memory which they can also share with their friends.

Research

Artist: Ryoji Ikeda

Ryoji has translated data to its bare minimums binary code left and right black and white as he says himself using mathematics, digital technology. The reason for this was to simplify before amplifying as we are surrounded by so much data that we often time don't even realize it. Ikeda gives new life to text, sounds, photos and movies as these are translated into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. The installation is a sensorial experience expanding over 180 Studios’ labyrinthine spaces. These are shared spaces that display unstructured projections onto the room 360 degrees. The installation is mainly output technology but having so many rooms creates parallel experiences, so does the differentiation of code and speakers throughout the different spots within the exhibit.

"Through its application, the project aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception. " VF Team

Reflection

Assignment reflection

What I liked the most about this art installation is that Lights, visceral patterns are converted into sound positioned at the center of the exhibition 360 sound is something that I only just realized was a different topic and I am looking forward to learning more about it in the coming months. As a creator my objective is to design immersive multisensorial experiences. I might not have gone as deep as I would have liked to into this topic during the last week, it is one that I find the most relevant and interesting to learn more about. In the last year, I have followed Fabricademy during which I have learned more about storytelling, and translation of ideas into playful experiences. That last one is what I am out in the look for some playfulness. What I really liked about this assignment is that it challenged me to think about the feasibility of the project regarding technical and financial aspects. I still thought it would be fun to run a bit wild, but the general consideration asked are very relevant for designing playful interactions.
