Week 3 Artificial Creatures

Week 3 Artificial Creatures

Homeostasis

In this weeks' assignment, we are learning how to translate the emotional needs of devices through the homeostasis model. This piece is written to best achieve balance within the system of the object by analyzing the attention-demanding feelings relevant for it to have a fulfilling existence.

Bonjour, this is Jean! Jean is an automatic sliding door and proud to be one of the main points of entries for visitors at the Louvre Museum in Paris. He is used to having a very active life and is used to seeing many people every day.

Jeans' primary Needs are:

  1. Welcoming humans to his home

  2. Keeping order of tourists.

  3. Making her home easily accessible to visitors.

Typically, Jeans' days are busy, and he loves to wake up early as his colleagues help him get his morning exercise when they come and go he gets to stretch and warm up.

Jean likes to be prepared and feel in control as he needs to manage the tourists that come and go. For this reason, his proximity sensor must always remain clean. When the settings are not right it makes Jean nervous as he might not open nice and wide when visitors need him to. Jean really enjoys his flexibility as it is very welcoming as it fitting to visitors and art pieces in a variety of sizes.

Last year Jean started to get lonely as he stood ready every morning fewer people visited and for longer periods of time, he didn't get any more workout. Jean got worried that he might get all rusty and stiff, but slowly his colleagues have been joining him for the daily exercises. Most importantly, the tourists started to come back. Even though Jean enjoyed the time off he really missed being part of the team, it is in his nature to know when people are welcome.

These new developments have resulted in him being used more than his colleagues "the handle" doors, Jean is sad to see this as they are his close neighbours and he wants to support his home, but he feels hopeful, the more people come the sooner things will be getting back to normal. Until then, Jean will here for you every day, doors wide open when you're ready!

Research on artificial creatures

This week we have looked at artificial creatures as a topic. Growing up in the 90's/00's, I got to experience several of the earlier versions of these technologies, the Tamagochi and the Robot dog are among many others that were part of my earlier encounters with artificial creatures. What has shifted in my interest on this topic is that much like many researchers the focus has shifted on better developing the human factors and needs that make to make a product that is actually needed and contributes to the improvement of society. What enjoy the most of these solutions is that they have found fun and light way to shift how we communicate.

Felix by Happy Bots

Initially I was unsure if I would select a robot as there are so many that are focusing on becoming more human like rather than enhancing the human experience. What I find great about the Happy Bots is that they provide a playful interface for people to practice social skills with. It is possible to talk to the Happy Bot and this will save the conversations in the form of journal. Even though I am not sure about the privacy issues on that end I provides a tool for people to log their emotions and look back to understand their development and possible points of improvement

Olly Robot

The reason for choosing the Oly robot is out of intrigue, the robot is said to develop a personality as they interact with you. This would mean that we are helping shape the robots, but are we forgetting about shaping ourselves as humans? Have we forgotten to use technology to help us move forward?

Agence- A dynamic film

Agence, is an interactive movie experience during which viewers get to be the third party who guide how the movie will flow. There are alien creatures that experience life and evolve during the viewing. What makes it great is that as part of the audience your opinion matters to the result. Remember feeding your Tamagotchi? To what extend will we keep considering and humanizing artificial creatures? Mother, The Bicentennial man, Her., Ex-Machina and Ashley They of Black mirror episodes are all examples of the red flags that should not be ignored when designing artificial creatures.
