Week 1 AR/VR

Week 1 AR/VR

Augmented reality (AR) can be defined as experiences that are the result of combining the real world with virtual elements to create enhanced visual and haptic experiences, auditory modalities can also be included. Some examples are social media filters, Pokémon-go, and the live numbers visible following sporting events during which live visuals containing information are added. A more generally known technology is Virtual reality (VR), which digitally simulates experiences. What makes these technologies great is the possibility to become immersed. There is no "obligation" to create a copy of the real world but one is able to design completely new worlds. VR has extended onto 360° experiences allowing users to transported onto whole new dimensions.

3 Concepts

WIld ThingS

Topic Environment:

Our actions determine how positively/negatively we will experience the environment around us the less waste the closer we come to experiencing nature. This concept supports the idea of using AR to feel more connected to nature. QR-codes are placed on the trash bins at outdoor locations such as the beach and parks the goal is to spark interaction which starts after scanning the code. The screen will change and the creatures are now visible. Tapp on the creatures to view "life" AR of the environment thriving. Inspiring you not to be litter.

Calm

Topic Healthy lifestyle: Calm is a virtual Yoga studio that makes it possible for participants to join in on the classes remotely.

Take away the stress of rushing to squeeze in relaxation time. Have the benefits of a live instructor while removing the stress of comparing ourselves to others during practice. You are in the same virtual room as your classmates but you can only see silhouettes of yourselves practising. To create a completely bespoke experience it is possible to select the desired 360 surrounding fitting to the backdrops that help us feel calm and relaxed. Put on your VR headset and open your yoga studio app and get ready to relax.

"Travel"

Topic Public transport: Travel is an augmented reality scavenger hunt. The people who are travelling by train/tram/bus. Are able to scan the interiors of the transportation where the word Travel is marked in 3D font. Which makes it possible to use the "Local Travel" app and your phone's camera to scan the world travel in between locations to unlock AR experiences linked to their location. The AR is displayed within the stations as well as these are the check-in and check out points. Each train route has its own AR scavenger route.

Interesting concept of AR and education

As a future UX-designer my focus really lies in further developing my skills in creating educational content. For this reason, I find AR to be very relevant in creating interactive learning experiences. Being someone who struggled with science in the past, I find that this multidimensional learning tool can really be great in helping practically focused students see the material from another perspective and gain a better understanding. Lastly, this project was very interesting as it makes learning "practical" science skills to students who otherwise may not have chemistry or bio-labs available for practice. There are several versions of the chemistry cards out there, Mark Costner has also released MoleculAR which provides 3D+360 views of molecules when studying. The University of Leiden and Delft are currently also working on AR applications that provide 360 degrees view of the human anatomy.

Interesting concept of VR and ART: Name:Digital Atmosphere

"The Augmented Reality sculpture’s Atmo Sensor picks up the invisible change of air quality of the immediate environment, which is translated into an evocative visual simulation, visible to the viewer through the AR headset."-Studio Above and Beyond I find found this piece to be very interesting as it tries to raise awareness by showing us what can't be seen. Air pollutions is a very important environmental issue that gets often "overlooked" as we cannot be disturbed by what isn't there. These type "around" you in a non-intrusive type of art pieces to create awareness I really like.
