Art at HBMS is a place to think creatively, try new things, and create original artwork you’re proud of. You’ll learn the creative process artists use to develop ideas while building skills and experimenting with many different materials. In art class, growth matters more than perfection—mistakes are expected and encouraged because that’s how learning happens. No matter your experience level, art is for everyone, and you’ll be supported as you work toward your personal best.

What Happens in Art 1?

In Art 1, 6th grade students explore a wide variety of art media aligned to the TEKS including:

• Drawing with graphite, colored pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, illustration markers, and oil pastels

• Painting with watercolor, watercolor pencils, acrylic, and glaze

• Printmaking using techniques like foam printing and gelli prints

• Ceramics & Sculpture using clay, papier-mâché, wire, found objects, and more

• Photography & Digital Media

You’ll learn how to choose the right tools and materials to bring your ideas to life while also learning about artists and artwork from both the past and today.

Students participate in class critiques to share ideas and reflect on their work, and there are many opportunities to display artwork in the school and community through exhibits, contests, and special HBMS events.

In art, it’s okay to not know everything right away. Trying new things, taking risks, and challenging yourself are all part of the process. Art class is a creative, respectful environment where everyone’s ideas matter.

Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to have their work proudly displayed in the following spaces or be entered into competitions:
