Auditions:
All performers are encouraged to audition. This will help the directors get to know them.
What will the audition consist of?
Performers entering a room with the directors and parent volunteers
Introduce themselves by saying:
first name, last name
preferred pronouns (if they'd like)
grade
Monologue
A short monologue, poem, or three facts you'd like to share
30 second - 1 minute
Song
Sing a song with or without accompaniment
30 seconds - 1 minute
This can be a song from a musical, a favorite pop song, or any song that you enjoy singing! You can also sing something simple like 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat' or 'Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.'
Roles
Please have kids take a look at the characters or roles in our musical before the initial audition and consider if there are any specific roles they are are excited to audition for and/or songs that they are excited to sing. This will help them to express which roles they are interested in during their audition.
Please note that larger roles will most likely go to 5th graders.
Ariel
A mermaid who longs to be human, is curious and adventurous. While she doesn't always feel understood, she deeply loves her friends and family. She is a dreamer and sees the world in unique ways, whether collecting everyday human stuff or dancing with a flock of seagulls. Gender: female; Vocal range top: D5; Vocal range bottom: Bb3
Ursula
The evil Sea Witch who tries to overthrow King Triton, is cunning and devious. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Gender: female; Vocal range top: D5; Vocal range bottom: F3
Scuttle, Scooter + Skipper
Scuttle, Scooter, and Skipper, a charismatic trio of seagulls, are the show's helpful narrators. Vocal range top: B4; Vocal range bottom: A3
Sebastian
A high-strung crab, serves as an advisor to King Triton and watches over Ariel. He is a stickler for the rules and a dramatic worrier, but he can be the life of the party when it comes to celebrating the world underwater. Gender: male; Vocal range top: B4; Vocal range bottom: A3
Flounder
Ariel's best friend, is a sweet and sincere fish who is loyal to the end. Flounder is nervous about the human world but shares Ariel's fascination and curiosity about life on land. Vocal range top: D5; Vocal range bottom: C4
Prince Eric
Prince Eric is an adventurous prince who feels most at home sailing the open seas. Kind and courageous, he connects with Ariel instantly over their shared desire to explore the world. Gender: male; Vocal range top: B4 Vocal range bottom: G3
King Triton
King Triton, father to Ariel and her six sisters, is the powerful ruler of the sea. This primarily speaking role needs to command the stage as a self-assured leader but also show the tenderness of a parent. Gender: male; Vocal range top: C5; Vocal range bottom: C4
Flotsam and Jetsam
A pair of electric eels, are Ursula's slippery spies. These two are sinister and sneaky, so look for performers who can be underhanded and devious while still being heard onstage. Vocal range top: C5; Vocal range bottom: C4
Grimsby
Prince Eric's buttoned-up guardian, is rigid in personality and constantly reminding the prince of his responsibility to the throne.
Mersisters (Aquata, Andrina, Arista, Atina, Adella, Allana)
Ariel's older sisters who are full of personality and sass. These spunky sisters are passionate about performing. Though they do not always understand Ariel, they love their youngest sister deeply. Gender: female Vocal range top: C5 Vocal range bottom: C4
Sea Chorus
Functions as the general ensemble, creating the environment of the underwater world. They are all part of King Triton's kingdom and should feel like a community, but each have their own individual personalities.
Sailors
The crew of Prince Eric's ship. They are eager for adventure and brave in the face of danger.
Merfolk
Members of King Triton's Court who can double as the Sea Chorus when not specifically assigned as merpeople.
Gulls
A flock of zany seagulls who join in "Positoovity" to help cheer up Ariel.
Callbacks
A callback in musical theatre is a second round of auditions where the creative team invites actors to try out for specific roles by singing songs and performing scenes as those characters from the script we will be using. We are also looking for how well performers can maintain focus, listen to instructions, and work with their fellow castmates. Performers will be asked to read/act out scenes and sing songs for the roles listed next to their names from the Little Mermaid Kids.
