Auditioning
Welcome to auditions!! We are thrilled that you are joining us on our journey to create a full scale musical theatre production!! For this initial audition, we ask that you prepare BOTH a 30-60 second song and a 30-60 second monologue.
If you are new to auditioning for musical theatre or have done it a hundred time there are still a few things that can be helpful to keep in mind:
Before the audition:
Research the show to understand its context and characters -
You can read the synopsis of the show on our Show Synopsis page
Consider which role or roles you might be interested in playing
Remember the lead roles require a lot of practice at home as well as more rehearsal time
Select a song that you feel good singing and that showcases your vocal range and talent
Select a monologue, poem, story, or three facts to share about yourself
Practice your material until it's second nature
This is key to success and feeling confident when you walk into the audition
On audition day:
Remember the director just wants to get to know you. Effort and focus are more important than perfection.
During the audition:
Be confident and engaging, speak loudly and clearly
Take direction well
Be kind to everyone you encounter
Audition Songs
It can be challenging to select an audition song. If you already have a song that you are excited to sing, please sing that for your auditions!
If you're new to the world of musical theatre finding an appropriate song can be challenging. Below are a few options for young performers to use if they'd like. Feel free to choose any one of these or choose something else. Remember to choose something that you feel great about singing and that comes from a musical.
Performers only need a short selection, 30 seconds to 1 minute of a song, plus 30 seconds to 1 minute of a monologue. The song and monologue combined should be around 1-2 minutes.
Audition Song Options:
Each song option in the folder below includes a link to a google drive folder with:
a set of lyrics
a guide vocal track (for learning the song)
a performance track (for use during the audition)
Performers can choose to audition with whichever track they prefer. We can hear them better if they use the performance track, but either it fine.
Audition Monologues
The director will need to hear the performer's voice and see that they can commit to memorizing or reading in a strong, clear voice.
Choose a monologue, poem, story of song that you like and are excited to memorize. You can look up kids monologues on the internet and find a zillion options. The monologue can be from a musical, a play, a movie, anything!
I have compiled a few options in this document:
Final Audition Tips
Practice before you audition.
Practicing your pieces in front of your family members or stuffies can make it easier to do them in front of the director.
Go for it in your audition!
The more committed you are to your acting choices, to speaking and singing loudly and clearly the better.
The director can't wait to meet you and is rooting for you to be the your very best!
Remember to have fun!
