The Hakka Association in Washington D.C. (HAWMA) held a "Dragon Boat Hakka Picnic and Hakka-Language Coffee Truck" event at Bohrer Park in Maryland on June 13. The celebration featured Hakka delicacies, interactive language activities, and arts performances, attracting enthusiastic participation from local Hakka compatriots and community members.
Hsu Chia-ching, Minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), attended the event alongside Liao Yun-hsuan, Deputy Director General of the Department of Overseas Compatriot Business; Jack Huang, Director of the Culture Center; and Deputy Director Rita Lee. They celebrated the festival with overseas compatriots, and Minister Hsu commended the Hakka Association for its long-term dedication to promoting Hakka culture and language preservation. The event was hosted by Katherine Liu Slater, President of the HAWAM, with OCAC Commissioner Chunming Tseng and several representatives from local Hakka organizations in attendance.
In addition to traditional Dragon Boat festival foods like Hakka zongzi (rice dumplings), ai ban (mugwort rice cakes), and ban zong, the event featured Hakka language lessons and interactive experiences, allowing attendees to learn about Hakka culture in a relaxed atmosphere. In her address, Hsu Chia-ching noted that Hakka culture is rich in humanistic spirit and life wisdom, emphasizing that language is the foundational root of cultural inheritance. She praised the association's creative initiative of launching the "Hakka-Language Coffee Truck." By using everyday dialogue such as ordering coffee and greetings, the initiative encourages people to speak Hakka and naturally integrates the language into daily life. This approach not only aids language preservation but also introduces Hakka culture to diverse communities.
Hsu pointed out that the OCAC has recently advanced its "Move to Next Generation" policy to encourage youth participation in community affairs and cultural inheritance work. She hopes that through creative and cultural activities, the Hakka language can become part of daily life and expand internationally, drawing more younger generations and mainstream society to appreciate the unique charm of Hakka culture. The event also featured Hakka folk song singing, dance performances, and interactive language games, creating a warm and lively atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed Hakka food, appreciated the performances, and networked, showcasing the strong cohesion of the overseas Hakka community and injecting new vitality into the promotion of Hakka language and culture.
On May 16, the Hakka Association participated in two events simultaneously on May 16!
On one side, we showcased the charm of Hakka culture at the Asian Fiesta, and on the other, we cheered for the Asian community at the DC Dragon Boat Race. This year, we brought specially made "Ma Dao Cheng Gong" (Success Immediately) cards and beautiful Tung blossom pinwheels—the children couldn't put them down!
Even better, we had cultural artifacts and shopping bags provided by the Hakka Affairs Council. It was unexpected to see bags printed with Hakka language on the streets of Washington D.C.
Although it was two events in one day, seeing everyone's enthusiastic response to Hakka culture made it all worth it. Dividing into two groups to fully support—this is our Hakka spirit!

The annual "Fiesta Asia Street Fair" was held on May 16, 2026, in Washington, D.C. Leading the effort, the Taiwanese Hakka Culture Foundation of America, along with the Greater Washington Area Hakka Association and the Washington DC Hakka TungFa Choir, set up a Hakka culture booth to participate in the event.
This year's Hakka booth theme was an introduction to "Hakka Tea," featuring tastings of "Oriental Beauty Tea," which attracted a steady stream of visitors and received countless compliments. The site also featured DIY workshops on Hakka children’s toys designed by board member Chang Shuhua: "Ma Dao Cheng Gong" (Instant Success) cards and "Tung Blossom Pinwheels." These activities attracted visitors of all ages, allowing them to stop, create, and learn about the origins and culture of the Hakka people.
Promotional materials and small items provided by the Taiwanese Hakka Affairs Council greatly boosted the promotion of "Hakka" culture; the Taiwanese Hakka souvenirs were in high demand and were fully distributed.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Overseas Community Affairs Council for their guidance and sponsorship, the Hakka Affairs Council for providing promotional materials, and the selfless dedication of all staff members, which allowed us to once again promote Taiwanese Hakka culture in this lively and joyful carnival.
