Free Medical Care for Hawaii’s Houseless

The first Hawaii H.O.M.E. Project student-run free clinic was established in 2006 at the Kaka’ako Next Step shelter adjacent to the school of medicine. This site was chosen by the state government as a temporary site for the houseless displaced from Ala Moana Park. The project later expanded to the Pai’olu Kaiaulu shelter in Waianae in 2007 and then to the Onemalu and Onelau’ena shelters in Kalaeloa in 2008. We have since expanded our outreach services to include many other sites across the island. To date, the project has had over 16,250 patient visits and has serviced over 5,200 individuals.

Services Offered:

Medical – Our clinics provide preventive medical services as well as management of acute and chronic medical conditions, including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, asthma, and more. We offer blood pressure and sugar checks, eye and ear exams, treatment of minor cuts and injuries, advanced wound care, well-child exams and general screening physicals, laboratory testing, immunizations and TB testing. We also provide limited pharmacologic assistance, and will arrange for qualifying patients to receive discounted medications through patient assistance programs.

Behavioral Health - Our clinics provide mental health services, which are an essential part of holistic medical care. We have both behavioral health providers for talk therapy as well as psychiatric services for medication management. Telehealth services available.

Social – We understand that many of our patients need social resources as much as they need medical care. Part of our aim is to serve as the gateway for our patients by connecting them to other community resources.

Vision – Vision care is a large need in this population. We can provide simple visual screening and eye glass prescriptions. We have also partnered with Lens Crafters to be able to provide free eye glasses for those without insurance.
