RISK MANAGEMENT

Kitchen and Tea Station

Hazards: CONTAMINATION: fridge, dishwashing items and tea towels, tea cups, work surfaces, transmission of disease between people. FOOD ITEMS: spoiled items, out of date items BURN HAZARDS: cooker, cookware and contents, hot water urn, pans and food balanced on trolleys TRIP HAZARDS: clutter, spilt food

Safety: CHECK CLEANLINESS BEFORE USE: dishwashing items and tea towels, tea cups, work surfaces CHECK BEFORE CONSUMING: food is fresh, use by dates SEALED FOOD PACKAGES to have OPENED ON label attached when opened. DO NOT TOUCH: cooker, metal surfaces on hot water urn (use gloves) BE MINDFUL: watch out for trip hazards, spilt food YOU! wash hands before cooking, do not cook if carrying transmissible disease.

Procedure: Regular cleaning procedures are in place: see cleaning guidelines and records Adhere to all safety/advisory signs Consult the manual before using the cooker (top-right cupboard above the cooker) Report any issues to a supervisor. When large numbers of people eating all cooking to be performed in the kitchen or outside on barbeques. Limit numbers of people in the kitchen and back room. Use social area worktops as staging post for serving.

Oscillating Spindle sander

Hazards: Exposed rotating sand paper can catch objects and abrade skin. Dust produced.

Safety: Wear eye protection Allow abrasive to pull on workpiece- sudden friction if pushing against rotation can snatch. Use dust collection

Procedure: Set up machine correctly using the supplied guards; see manual if unsure. After starting the machine apply the workpiece so the sandpaper is pulling away from your hands as this stops the danger from grabbing. Always use dust collection- the portable hoover is good for this.

Buffing wheels

Hazards: Exposed rotating machinery can cause flying objects to damage eyes and unprotected skin. e.g. brush wires, metal particles, objects being cleaned/polished.

Safety: Wear FULL FACE SHIELD, protective gloves and protective clothing. Ensure other personnel are at least 2M CLEAR.

Procedure: Ensure work area is clear of other personnel. Check direction of rotation of wire brush or polishing wheel. The rotation should pull object being cleaned /polished away from the operator. In case of brush damage or severe vibration do not use machine and report to supervisor.

Sander/s

Hazards: Exposed moving belt and disk Thin material dragged into machine Cuts and abrasions to hands

Safety: No loose clothing Long hair under control Wear eye protection Wear dust mask

Procedure: Refer to a supervisor for initial tuition. Avoid sanding small pieces – or use specific holders for wood. Never sand metal on this machine. Ensure dust extraction is turned on and baffles set correctly.

Wood Lathe

Hazards: Exposed rotating machine parts and work piece. Digging in. Exploding work piece due to faulty timber

Safety: No loose clothing Long hair under control Wear eye protection

Procedure: Take tuition in turning before using this machine. Mount work piece and ensure it turns freely before switching on. Be aware of the potential to get tools and fingers caught between the work piece and the tool rest- move the tool rest away when not in use (sanding etc.).

Band Saw -= YOU MUST HAVE AN INDUCTION BEFORE USE

Hazards: Exposed blade with teeth Jamming of blade

Safety: No loose clothing Long hair under control Wear eye protection

Procedure: With mains switched off ensure the blade turns freely and is supported by the thrust bearings. Switch on and run the machine checking the blade runs true- if it does not then it needs adjusting. Only adjust if you know what you are doing. The same goes for changing the blade. Keep hands away from the blade when in use, use push sticks for small pieces or attach them to larger pieces to allow control.

Sliding Mitre Saw YOU MUST HAVE AN INDUCTION BEFORE USE

Hazards: Dangerous Saw Blade Woodchips and dust in eyes Noise

Safety: NO LOOSE CLOTHING LONG HAIR UNDER CONTROL Wear EYE PROTECTION Ensure GUARDS IN PLACE Clamp workpiece IF HANDS NEAR BLADE

Procedure: Ensure clear blade guard fitted and functioning before switching on. Set up and use dust extractor for prolonged use. Ensure timber is securely placed and held against the guide- use clamps if needed to keep hands away from blade by at least 100mm or 4 inches. Either chop or push the blade into the wood, NEVER pull the blade across the wood. Pull red lever on handle if chopping, switch ON and make the cut. Do not adjust anything while machine is running. Turn saw OFF. Wait for saw to STOP before picking up the pieces. Clean up.

Drill Press

Hazards: Shavings in Eyes. Clothes/hair caught in machine. Chuck key left in - can throw out when machine starts Drill jams and rotates work piece

Safety: NO LOOSE CLOTHING LONG HAIR UNDER CONTROL Wear EYE PROTECTION Keep HANDS away from drill bit. Clamp down work piece

Procedure: Lock drill bit in chuck using chuck key. Good practice: when you pick up the chuck key it does not leave your hand until back in its storage position. Locate drill bit over target mark. If possible clamp down the work. Turn on machine - wait for full speed. Using manual lowering arm, move drill through material, backing off to clear swarf if necessary. Do not move material during the drilling operation. Lift drill to its rest position, turn off & wait until rotation of the bit stops. Remove work piece & clean up

Table Saw

Hazards: Dangerous Saw Blade Woodchips and dust in eyes Noise

Safety: NO LOOSE CLOTHING LONG HAIR UNDER CONTROL Wear EYE PROTECTION Use PUSH STICKS Ensure GUARDS IN PLACE

Procedure: Adjust height of blade and guard to suit thickness of timber to be sawn. Set up and use dust extractor. Check position of fence. Do not adjust anything while machine is running. Switch ON. Cut timber using PUSH STICKS for small pieces & at the end of the cut. Turn saw OFF. Wait for saw to STOP before picking up the pieces. Clean up.
