Notable
This page houses documents that are interesting, probably old, and do not fit easily in another category.
Currently, it has two Hartford area bird lists with seasonal timing information. One is by HAS founder John Sage in 1902 on Spring migration and the other is a 1954 checklist by HAS. I am not sure you can find better old data on Hartford area birds.
It is no longer on the Wood Memorial website, but they have a long interview with Charles Neilsen about life and birding in South Windsor for most of the 20th century. Charles was an HAS member and relative of CW Vibert.
Lewis Farm has a large rock with a bronze plaque dedicated to Alex Bergstrom. He was a big part of HAS in the 1950-1970 period. The link is to a Wikipedia article with two pictures.
There are also organization pages from some 1950s program books. We might be able to learn something from them. By the way, they had two member meetings a month.
A copy of the classy handout Adrian and Beth Nichols gave out on a 2010 trip is here, too.
Sometimes notable interest refers to current writings about the past. Consider the writings of one of our own, Paul Cianfaglione.
Also from the past is John J. Audubon's Pileated Woodpecker.
A 1909 photo of the Hartford Bird Study members appears in a 2020 article by Wood Memorial on the start of HAS.
A very nice tribute letter to Stephanie Lovell from the Montgomery Bird Club is here, too.
