The objective of this research is to work with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) and industry partners to revise the department’s post-earthquake bridge inspection protocol. This research has already helped ODOT save time and money.
The results of Phase 1 of this research were publicly released on March 31, 2016. The ODOT press release can be seen here: LINK.
Phase 2 involved developing and implementing ShakeCast for ODOT, which officially went live on August 7, 2017: LINK.
“This technology is one of the biggest advances in ensuring public safety that I’ve seen in my 30-year career at the department,” said Casey Shell, ODOT chief engineer. “By comparing state bridge data with the severity of an earthquake’s ground motions, ShakeCast will allow us to inspect fewer bridges but with a much greater degree of confidence that we could quickly find any potential damage.”

The objective of this project is to develop analysis techniques to study the effect of large number of small earthquakes on bridges and identify appropriate ABC methods for repair of bridges damaged by induced earthquakes. Expected outcomes will be new analysis tools and guidelines to assess for damage from induced earthquakes and specifications for application of ABC repair methods.
