Space Game - VR

Summary

Team: VR Space Game

Role: Designer/Level Designer

Year Created: 2021

Space Game VR is a first person experience where the player must pilot through a training course is space whilst on a timer. The player must fly through various hooped checkpoints while also avoiding various space debris.

This project was created during the VR unit at AIE.

Post-Mortem

This was the first VR project I ever worked on. The development of Space Game - VR was a little rough however there was a lot to learn from the experience. This was a collaborative project between the designers, programmers and artists. It went for around four weeks, the artists joined the project after the first two weeks as they had other work at the time.

During the duration of the project I mainly focused on the layout of levels, placing decoration in the scenes, as well as various pre-production work before we began to build the game in unity.

For roughly two of the four weeks we were working on the project we were in lockdown and thus could not work in person. This made working on the project a challenge as not everyone who worked in engine had access to a VR headset. This made tweaking on the game felt very difficult.

One hurdle that most if not all VR games have to overcome at some point is avoiding making the player motion sick at all cost. This can be especially difficult as the project we were working on had the player moving quite fast when flying their ship. One of the main ways we overcame this hurdle was by making sure that the players camera was never too close to assets outside of the shit unless they were obstacles to be avoided. This greatly reduced motion sickness, however a specific maneuver that the player can do in the ship could still make players feel a little ill regardless. This was when the player moved the ship backwards and then rotated the ship at the same time as being close to an obstacle. Unfortunately we did not have the time to fix this however encountering these issues helped open my eyes to the difficulty of creating games in VR.

I'm definitely excited at the prospect of potentially working on other VR projects in the future!
