Summary
Team: Dynamics Happen
Role: Level Designer/Artist
Year Created: 2020
MotherDuck is a local two player game where both players must compete with each other whilst traversing the level to find and collect the most ducks.
In this project Dynamics Happen worked on the QV Centre level, which is modeled after the QV Centre in the city of Melbourne, Australia.
Post-Mortem
In this project we were tasked with creating a level for the game MotherDuck. It had to be constructed after a real location in the city of Melbourne, however it did not need to be identical, allowing us some creative freedom for it's appearance. There were four people in team Dynamics Happen and we all had essentially the same role, using Maya and Photoshop create assets to place into the level, as well as construct the buildings/area that the players will be able to explore.
This was the first group project we did that had only designers. Unfortunately we also had to create the level from our own homes as Melbourne was in lockdown at that current time. This created the challenge of trying to create the QV Centre to scale without having the proper opportunity to measure the height and width of certain objects. To overcome this challenge we did a variety of online research for the scale of certain objects such as escalators. We also compared the height of people compared to what they were standing next to in pictures to try and get a rough estimate on how tall objects were.
This project was a valuable experience as it was my first adventure into the world of Level Design, which is now my main focus in game development. It also helped me to further understand the artist pipeline for creating assets and then having them imported into engine.
