The tradition of chanting Hare Krsna under the tree in the park was established by our spiritual master, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta swami Prabhupad on October 9, 1966. This was done under the majestic Elm tree that still grows in this park today. The atmosphere of the meeting was as follows:
In 1998, Srila Prabhupada's disciple Vani Devi Dasi began efforts to have the Hare Krsna tree officially recognized as the place where the international Hare Krsna movement originated. This effort was crowned with success after three years. On the day of Srila Prabhupada's passing on November 18, 2001, a meeting was held there to celebrate the official installation of an informational plaque with text describing the significance of the place and the tree:
Now the Hare Krsna tree in New York City is a well-known meeting place for Srila Prabhupada's followers
