The Hare Krsna movement was founded in the twentieth century by Bhaktivedanta swami Prabhupad. He first called it the League of Devotees and later ISKCON, the International Society for Krsna Consciousness.
Just as the Lord guided him in his heart.
Until Srila Prabhupada's physical passing away in 1977, the Movement had spread widely, and had become known all over the world.
After the departure of its founder, the Movement continued to develop into many different groups, temples and preaching projects. Each center of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness holds regular meetings, which are open to the general public and are always free of charge.
In fact, our organizers are not paid, and they organize the meetings under the Hare Krsna tree voluntarily and free of charge as their service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, we never charge any admission fee at our meetings to enrich or maintain the family of the local organizer, as Srila Prabhupad advises:
"Those who can give voluntary service, "Welcome." Otherwise we don't require. At least they should not be given any salary. That is very bad. This is against principle."
Therefore under the Hare Krsna tree everyone is welcome. We do not charge any admission fee, so everyone can attend our regular meetings. And indeed, supporters of various spiritual societies from different social groups meet here neformally.
We chant Hare Krsna mahamantra together, study Srila Prabhupada's books, talk about our realizations while practicing bhakti yoga, and take prasadam, the consecrated food. The Hare Krsna Tree provides us with a place where we can gather freely and joyfully:
"This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement gives you everything you want, without any artificial endeavor. It is transcendentally colorful and full of transcendental pleasure. We prosecute these Kṛṣṇa consciousness activities through singing, dancing, eating, and talking philosophy received through authorized disciplic succession, and therefore it gives us everything we want, without any artificial change of our natural instincts. The consciousness is there in you, but it is now dirty consciousness, and what you have to do now is to cleanse it from all dirty things and make it clear Kṛṣṇa consciousness in pleasant method by chanting the glorified holy name of God: Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare. These performances we can practice anywhere. It does not matter either in a temple, or in a street, or in a park, or at home. But to assemble together and sit together, we require a place for congregation ..." https://prabhupadabooks.com/classes/general/recorded_speech_to_members_of_iskcon_london/los_angeles/december/23/1968
