October 2022

October 2022:  The confirmed toxic planktonic blue-green algae  (BGA), Microcystis Aeruginosa, remains visually present again in the lake. The water clarity overall is poor, and  has been turbid with a greenish tint and visible BGA particulate within the water column. BGA odors remain noticeable. Though odors and their strengths are not always explicitly noted with each image, it does not imply that no comment on odor means no BGA odor were detected. The likelihood of BGA odor being present and detectable upon these weekly observations is high. The BGA odor strength usually increases with the visual amount of BGA present.  the FL-DEP confirms Microcystin toxin remains present in their monthly sampling.

There has been no additional methods used by the City to proactively prevent these toxic blooms (and improve overall water quality) in 2021 to present whatsoever-- multiple suggestions requested since 2020 (and listed on this website) remain purposefully ignored without explanation.

The BGA may have possibly been stunted, due to the high winds and overcast weather conditions that occurred during and post Hurricane Ian (9/28/22). Those weather conditions have effects on this cyanobacteria and its environment.  The lake water did shift to a more brown overall color versus green, during this month. Though, BGA and its odor still persists longer in cattail areas.

For brevity, when the term "BGA" is referenced in the photo notes, it means the long-established "Microcystis Aeruginosa" type, with the bright green paint like appearance. Lyngbya is "Lyngbya Wollei".

November 2022

November 2022: The confirmed toxic planktonic blue-green algae  (BGA), Microcystis Aeruginosa, remains visually present in the lake.  After some research, it appears there's likely a secondary BGA type present, in a clumpy granular form, that has created it's own visual surface particulate. Its textured clumps turn into larger grainy bright green masses. It is obviously visually different than the documented uniform paint like and streaking appearance of the Microcystis Aeruginosa type, especially when they both occur simultaneously. (See Nov 23 2022 1:32 PM photo for comparison)

The water clarity remains turbid with a greenish tint when BGA particulate accumulates in higher quantities. Visible BGA particulate is present within the water column. BGA odors remain noticeable. Though odors and their strengths are not always explicitly noted with each image, it does not imply that no comment on odor means no BGA odor were detected. The likelihood of BGA odor being present and detectable upon these weekly observations is high.

There has been no additional methods used by the City to proactively prevent these toxic blooms (and improve overall water quality) in 2021 to present whatsoever-- multiple suggestions requested since 2020 (and listed on this website) remain purposefully ignored without explanation.

For brevity, when the term "BGA" is referenced in the photo notes, it means the long-established "Microcystis Aeruginosa" type, with the bright green paint like appearance. BGA clumps or granular BGA is likely another type different from Microcystis Aeruginosa.

December 2022

December 2022:   The confirmed toxic planktonic blue-green algae  (BGA), Microcystis Aeruginosa,  that has been dominant in the lake for years is growing and creating increased shoreline surface bloom buildups, where higher Microcystin toxin risks are present in these scums.

There has been no additional methods used by the City to proactively prevent these toxic blooms (and improve overall water quality) in 2021 to present (end of year 2022) whatsoever-- multiple suggestions requested since 2020 (and listed on this website) remain purposefully ignored without explanation.

Dec 22, 2022 -- The City Lake Contractor (Cardno-Stantec) sprayed, from two boats, on the surface of the lake, a 8th application, of an unknown volume of "GreenClean 5.0" peroxide treatment around the lake perimeter. After this 8th treatment, the lake water does not appear the same as  after the first treatment results in March 2020, where maximum clarity and elimination of detectable Microcystin toxin were achieved for a short time period. Currently, after the 8th treatment, toxic blue-green algae (BGA) is still present in large visible quantities.  Therefore, algal toxins and their health risks to humans are still present and the long-term exposures of the Microcystin and BMAA in the air/water are compounding.  Surface BGA scums and strong odors continue to be present.

For brevity, when the term "BGA" is referenced in the photo notes, it means the long-established "Microcystis Aeruginosa" type, with the bright green paint like appearance. BGA clumps or granular BGA is likely another type different from Microcystis Aeruginosa.
