Our breeding dogs complete health testing appropriate for the Golden Retriever breed, including orthopedic screening through the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and genetic testing through Embark. Health testing helps reduce risk and guides responsible breeding decisions, particularly for structurally sound, active dogs.
We also carefully evaluate pedigree, temperament, and structure when planning each pairing. Only select females are bred, and dogs are retired early so they can enjoy full lives as family companions.
All puppies receive appropriate veterinary care before going home. This includes a comprehensive wellness exam with our veterinarian, age-appropriate vaccinations, and routine deworming. Each puppy leaves with official veterinary records documenting their first visit and care received.
Puppies are raised in our home and receive daily handling, routine exposure to household activity, and age-appropriate socialization. We focus on confidence, resilience, and temperament development to help puppies transition smoothly into their new homes.
Puppies go home with a care package, weight tracking and schedule information, and a comfort item that carries the scent of their mother and littermates to ease the transition.
Golden Retrievers, as a breed, are unfortunately predisposed to certain inherited health conditions, including joint disease, autoimmune disorders, and some cancers. These conditions occur across bloodlines and can affect even carefully bred dogs.
While health testing and responsible breeding help reduce risk, no breeder can eliminate these breed-wide predispositions entirely. We believe transparency and education are essential so families can make informed decisions and provide appropriate lifelong care.
Structural soundness and overall health are especially important for Golden Retrievers in active and hunting homes. Our emphasis on orthopedic health, temperament, and balanced structure supports dogs that can thrive in the field while still being calm, comfortable companions at home.

We stand behind the puppies we raise and remain a resource for families throughout their dog’s life. If circumstances ever change, puppies bred at Happy Heart Homestead are always welcome back to us. Our commitment to each puppy extends far beyond the day they go home.
