形意字
One of the most seen Hanzi: "大" means "big" in English. We see "大" as a front view person with his arms and legs spread out, and this position occupies a big space.
"羊", which means "sheep" in English. "羊" is interpreted as the front view of a sheep head; the top part represents the sheep's horn
•When we put "羊" and "大" together gives us "美", which means "beautiful" in English. As we already learned "大" and "羊", the students can easily speculate that "美" is a person wearing a sheep head. Since sheep were prized in ancient China, wearing a sheep head was considered beautiful.
As we know "大" means "big" in English. We see "大" as a front view person with his arms and legs spread out, and this position occupies a big space. We also learned we can put “羊”,as a component on top of “大” to form new Hanzi.
Brainstorming time, these Hanzi “天”、“太”、“爽”、“头”、“夫” are extensions of “大”. Guess their meanings.
“好” means good in English. It consists two components: “女” and “子” which means woman and child in English. What Chinese people see “good” is having children and wife.
“安” is formed by “宀” and “女” means “settle” in English. We already know “女” means woman. “宀” typically means in a building. Therefore, we can see “安” as a woman in a building.
From “好” and “安”, we can see that treat woman with respect is the value left to the Chinese by their ancestors.
The character "不" means 'no' in English. The horizontal line of the upper part "一" symbolizes the ground, while the lower part symbolizes a seedling under the ground. The ancient Chinese used a seedling that did not sprout to express the implicit concept of negation. When the seedling emerges out of the ground, then the word "不" turns into "才" meaning 'talent' in English. The horizontal line here also refers to the ground. While the little spike on the ground represents that the seedling is good and has potential for further growth. When the seedling grows up, it makes the character into "生" meaning 'grow' in English. In this Hanzi, the horizontal line symbolizing the ground moves to the lowest part, which shows that the seedling has been growing as expected.
