California is a state with rich agriculture which is where most farm workers reside in. It's successful industry is due to the workers who provide fresh fruits and vegetables in the supermarkets. There are many organizations as well that adocate for the rights of these workers. The statistics in California Agriculture present that majority of farm workers in California identify as Hispanic or Latino. Most of which were born outside of the country.
The majority of California workers are Hispanic or Latino, according to American Farmland Trust. This means that Latinos are more likely to face poverty rates and face various setbacks in society.
The issue dates back to the 1940s when Farms needed workers during the time of WW2. The Bracero Program introduced Mexican workers to U.S. Farms but various issues such as low wages, work conditions, and housing were present.
The issues continue to this day, and farm workers are vulnerable to exploitation as they are undocumented and have a harder time receiving rightful pay.
Organizations such as the CFF and the UFW are taking action towards these issues by providing programs and services that farm workers can take advantage of.
