The United Farm Workers

A significant event that led to the rise of the UFW was the grape strike that boycotted the purchase of grapes. In 1965, thousands of workers voted in favor of striking. Workers involved in the strike were at high risk of losing their jobs and homes from employers who were also growers. 

In collaboration with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) Filipino and Latino farm workers came together to protest against low wages. According to National Park Service , "This decision was a big risk for Delano’s grape workers. Many lived in company housing and could be evicted with little or no notice, and, indeed, many eventually were forced to leave their homes due to striking." Cesar Chavez was a significant figure in this movement as he became a leader and organizer of this memorable strike. The strike results were rewarding as they achieved a raise in wages and a union contract between farm workers and its employers.
