Halloween Graveyard Tombstones

Halloween Graveyard Tombstones

You can build a Halloween graveyard in your front yard... or backyard if you like! A graveyard scene is one of the coolest decorations you can make in October. What a great way to add to the spooky, fun feeling we all get around Halloween! Now let's see how you can create a scary cemetery scene in your own yard.

First off, don't wait until the very last minute! Some cemeteries can be quite extensive, and you won't be able to do that in a few days. Plan how you want your boneyard to look. You can plan how many tombstones you want and where you want to place them to make your pottery field as creepy as possible.

If you're making your very first Halloween graveyard, keep it simple this time. With more experience, you can build a more elaborate cemetery.

It's easy to build a graveyard

An easy way to build a graveyard scene is to make your own tombstones out of cardboard. Cut the cardboard in the shape of a tombstone and paint it gray. Come up with funny epitaphs to write one each. Bill is dead, the end, or Bill was a liar when he was alive, and now all he does is lie. Or write funny names on it I.B. Death or U.R. Next one. Hang a sign that reads "Welcome to Necropolis".

Make some tombstones

You can also purchase simple cardboard headstones from an online Halloween catalog store. They have ready-made bricks that are ready to set up. Some headstones are made of cardboard and some are made of foam. These headstones may be pre-assembled or you may need to put them together using clips or glue. They can even be attached to a wooden post that you simply insert into the ground.

However you decide to buy your headstones, if you have them, place them where you want them in your yard. Wow, it's starting to look good, you're almost done! Place some leaves in front of each stone so that it resembles a burial mound. Grab some fake cobweb material and string it from one brick to another. Use some glow in the dark paint to decorate the cemetery a bit...don't overdo it, you want it to look macabre.

Make some shadows

If you have spot lights in your yard, why not put them in the back of the headstones. Do not use too many and make sure that the wires are safely hidden so that no one can trip over them. The lights will create shadows in your graveyard and make it look spooky. You only need one light for three or four tombstones, so don't put too much light on... it won't be scary if you do.

Get some body parts

Grab an old shirt or pair of gloves and fill them with newspaper or leaves. Let them hang from the mounds, as the dead who are buried there rise. You can buy some bones, unless you happen to already have a skeleton laying around, and place them in the Halloween graveyard you made in your front yard.

Welcome to the cemetery

Now if you're a more experienced graveyard maker, you know exactly what to do. Keep adding something to your gory funeral scene every year, and before you know it, you'll be "The Graveyard" house everyone wants to go see! You can even add some scary Halloween music to your grave scene to give people chills as they go by.

It's fun and easy to make a graveyard in your front yard for Halloween, so give it a try. You can turn it into a project and get the whole family involved.
