Standard 8: The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, social, and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community memebers.
Artifact Description: This poster was made during curriculum night at the beginning of the school year while I was student teaching at Aqsa School. Parents who attended had the chance to write an encouraging and lovable message as a reminder to students that their parents are supportive and part of our class community. The purpose of this artifact is to strengthen the relationship for the development and well-being of students.
IPTS Connection: This poster shows proof I can "establish respectful and productive relationships with parents or guardians and seek to develop cooperative partnerships to promote student growth and learning " (8Q). This is shown through the importance of establishing a strong relationship of trust, respect, and transparency between parents, students, and teachers.
What I learned: Initiating and creating this artifact made me realize how a positive relationship with parents can be created at the beginning of the school year. In addition, it helps teachers to have a positive relationship with students, and feel secure and loved. Moreover, it gives students the confidence to explore their world, try new things, and learn.
Sneak Peek of the Week
Artifact Description: This weekly sneak peek template was used while I was student teaching at Aqsa School. Each week a sneak peek of the week would be uploaded on Google Classroom Announcements for parents to see. The template was used as a way to inform parents of the learning focuses, bell ringers, assigned reading, homework, and upcoming events every week.
IPTS Connection: Using this weekly template shows I can "use digital tools and resources to promote collaborative interaction" (8M). This is shown through how it creates a cultivating atmosphere of trust and respect when keeping parents in the loop. The weekly sneak peek makes parents feel as if they are part of the journey, they understand the process, and they see the dedication behind the scenes.
What I learned: Posting the sneak peek made me understand how such a digital source has a remarkable impact. It is one tool that a teacher can use to bridge the relationship between school and home. It allows parents to not be bystanders in their children's education, but rather make them feel heard, valued, and appreciative.
