Among the Hidden Weekly Quiz
Artifact Description: This quiz was created for the 6th grade Reading Class while I was student teaching at Aqsa. Students every week would take a quiz connected with the reading that week. The purpose of the quiz mainly was to assess student's comprehension and learning.
IPTS Connection: This quiz shows I "uses assessment results to determine student performance levels, identify learning targets, select appropriate research-based instructional strategies, and implement instruction to enhance learning outcomes" (7J). Students took the quizzes weekly to assess their reading comprehension and vocabulary skills. Such assessment helped gather and organize data per student. The weekly quizzes helped determine whether objectives were met for the following week.
What I learned: Utilizing such weekly quizzes while reading a chapter book, I was able to determine what my students learned versus what they struggled to comprehend or misinterpret. It helped students to practice self-improvement before sitting for the unit test. In addition, it helped me reflect on my teaching and think of other strategies to fit my students' needs.
Artifact Description: This rubric was created while I was student teaching at Aqsa School American Literature (College Prep and Honors). After reading The Crucible students had to write their essays. This rubric was created to help assess and evaluate students' essays.
IPTS Connection: The rubric I created shows I " understand that assessment is a means of evaluating how students learn and what they know and are able to do in order to meet the Illinois Learning Standards" (7B). Following this rubric helps students know what to include in their essays. In other words, it helps students understand the expectations and components of the essay. In addition, it shows proof I can "maintain useful and accurate records of student work and performance" (7M). Creating this rubric allows the teacher to evaluate students' essays by providing feedback to students and assessing their learning.
What I learned: While creating this rubric, I learned rubrics are effective for both teachers and students. It is a valuable way to utilize to evaluate and assess students learning. It helps students understand the expectations and elements integrated with the assignment making students more aware of their learning outcomes. Making this rubric made it easier for me to focus on certain goals I wanted to accomplish with my students.
