Our Positive Snowflakes
I wanted to do something fun, but had meaning for students' well-being and mindset. As we know snowflakes are white and when they fall from the sky they are pure. While they are falling they expand and change to different shapes and evolve into becoming a bigger snowflake, or else they just melt. If we always feed our thoughts with negativity we melt and become unproductive. We must feed our souls and minds with positivity. For this activity, students had to write only positive words and goals they had in mind and wanted to accomplish. The pictures are self-explanatory to how much students enjoyed such activity!
Meet our Class Plant, Felicia!
At the beginning of the school year, the school announced that each teacher needs to have their class pet. Since my cooperating teacher and I fear having a pet animal. We wanted to do something fun and different. We asked students to suggest names. After tallying the repeated names, we created a ballot for students. They had to vote for one female name and one male name. After that, we counted the repeated names and made a gender reveal party for our students over the intercom. During the semester, we had fun dressing her up every week with our students, especially when the change of season hit, or there was a special event going on around school!
My Bulletin Boards
While student teaching at Aqsa, I took the initiative to create the English Department's Bulletin Boards in the hallway. These are some of what I have created this past semester. As you can see, the first is connected with the form of spelling. My cooperating teacher and I noticed it was a consistent issue. So, we decided to make it connected with spelling. Students can always see it while walking to their classes, which helps to retain it easily. The other bulletin board is connected with the school theme 'Trust.' Students had to write at the beginning of the year a trust poem and talk about it from their perspective. In addition, showcasing students' work gives them ownership leading to better behavior and attitude.
Solidarity Walk for Our People in Gaza
At my student teaching placement, I had the opportunity to participate in a solidarity walk. Aqsa School held to raise awareness of Gaza humanitarian crisis and students from Kindergarten through 12th grade participated in the walk. We walked together with signs on our chests symbolizing who we were walking for. This will be a day I will never forget. This is the least I can do as a Palestinian- American Teacher!
Student Teaching Experience
The staff at Aqsa were such an amazing staff. The positive environment allowed me to grow and become a more confident teacher. The picture on the left was taken when the staff threw me a "Thank You Party" when we had a PLC meeting. Each teacher took the time to say a positive message and what they have learned from me while being part of the staff. Moreover, the message is a screenshot of what Aqsa's Principal Mrs. Tammie Ismael sent me. Mrs. Ismael's words made me feel valuable because she was part of my growth and becoming the leader, I am today. She allowed me to spread my wings and get out of my comfort zone even when things were becoming challenging and more difficult. Overall, this experience made me realize that I chose the right career. I can't wait to see what the future has for me!
