Coding Club For Students in Fifth though Ninth Grade
Join us once a month this spring and summer (April - August) on the first Monday of the month at 6pm. Club members will pick a project to work on from design to build to testing and ending with a presentation of what they created.
Club members select/create projects that they want to develop either individually or in groups. Progress on these projects is tracked on our wall board. At the end of our current session cycle (typically 10-12 weeks but only 5 in the summer), our club hosts an open house where the members present what they built and what they learned along the way.
DESIGN: This first step includes defining and designing the project to be built. Club members develop and utilize the necessary skills for all tech-related projects like understanding personas, defining requirements, setting goals, creating user stories, story boarding, wire framing, and documentation.
BUILD: Once the club member has designed their project, they start to build it. Typically this is the longest step in our project (and if there are issues found in the test step, projects come back here as they iterated). Club members code their project through the use of the different tools in the tech stack(s) selected such as Scratch, Python (e.g. trinket.io, repl.it), HTML/CSS/JS (e.g. codepen.io, glitch,), micro:bit, Circuit Playground, and Arduino.
TEST: After the project is built, its gets tested. First by the club member(s) involved with the build and then by other club members. This helps build club members knowledge of testing and quality assurance skills. As bugs are found, the project iterates back to build and returns for more testing after resolution.
PRESENT: Finally, the club member(s) prepare the project for presentation. In this step, they may formally publish their project (sharing it in the platform developed and via a link on our club's project website). They will compose a short description of the project and consider offering a list of future development they might want to undertake to expand it.
