Technology transfer training took place at the Innovation Center of KAU (August 14, 2020)

The management technology specialist Dmytro Kovalyov conducted one more training for employees of Kyiv Academic University (KAU) in the framework of the training series on the commercialization of innovations. The third training was devoted to the technology transfer sphere and the concept of "industry value-chain".

Technology transfer is usually considered from the creation point of an invention to the first external funding, whether it is a grant or investments. According to Dmytro Kovalyov, it would be more logical to continue this "chain of events" until the commercialization of technology, that is, until the moment when the invention is completely “converted” into money on the personal account of the inventor and his investors.

Thus, during the training, Dmytro Kovalyov considered the concept of "industry value-chain" as a part of the more global concept of "5 Competitive Forces" by Michael Porter, proposed in 1973, in relation to the technology transfer sphere. Moreover, the speaker along with the participants distinguished three types of channels and branches in this chain:

  1. Basic Channel: the one to be guided by, because this channel of commercialization is used to transfer the majority of inventions.

  2. Alternatives: used by fewer inventions, but also lead them to the point of “converted” money on the personal account of the inventor.

  3. Additional Branches: able to provide with additional financial and non-financial resources, but only an already successful project on the market. It is impossible to turn the invention into money due to "additional" branches. They strengthen the project, but they don't make the difference between success and failure.

Based on the model of “Technology Transfer: Industry Value-Chain”, the participants of the training have designated the assets, which are currently in the portfolio of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as well as Academ.City (areas controlled by these organizations). It will help better represent the situation with the commercialization of the developments of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and make a decision on further actions.
