ENGAGE
#1 Does IXL allow students to focus on the task of the assignment or activity with less distraction (Time on Task)?
IXL does allow students to focus on the task of the assignment with less distraction by tailoring the questions to the ability level of each student. Additionally, when students are working, the teacher can monitor their progress through the Live Classroom feature which also allows them to send direct messages to the students to re-direct them if a student appears to be idle when they are working on an assignment.
#2 Does IXL motivate students to start the learning process?
IXL does motivate students to start the learning process by offering them beginner-style questions at the start of each skill practice before progressively making the questions more challenging as students begin to get more questions correct. However, while IXL may motivate students to start the learning process, IXL does struggle to maintain that motivation by how they keep track of a student's progress for each skill. This will be detailed further in my Screencast!
#3 Does IXL cause a shift in the behavior of the students, where they move from passive to active social learners (co-use or co-engagement)?
IXL does allow students to shift from a passive approach to a more active approach through features on the platform that allow and encourage partner work. One of the ways for which active learning can be achieved through IXL is by the use of a Group Jam or a Lightning Jam which have students collaborating together as a unit to work towards finding the correct solution.
ENHANCE
#1 Does IXL aid students in developing a more sophisticated understanding of content?
IXL provides students the opportunity to practice with concepts learned in class. It is a supplement to the material provided in class and it gives students the platform to rotely go through problems at their own pace.
#2 Does IXL create scaffolds to make it easier to understand concepts or ideas?
IXL does create scaffolds to make it easier to understand concepts by providing students with detailed explanations when they answer a question wrong. Students also can watch a video example of a problem before trying it again on their own. Lastly, when students incorrectly answer a question and after they review the explanation, they are given an easier question to get them back on track before increasing the difficulty level again.
#3 Does IXL create paths for students to demonstrate their understanding of the learning goals in a way that they could not do with traditional tools?
IXL does create paths for students to demonstrate their understanding of the learning goals in a way that they could not do with traditional tools by providing students with an interactive experience when they are answering the practice questions. Depending on the skill, students can manipulate graphs, transform shapes, create box-and-whisker plots and much more through this tool that they would not be able to do so quickly on paper.

EXTEND
#1 Does IXL create opportunities for students to learn outside of their typical school day?
Students can choose to use IXL at home for extra practice if they are feeling inclined to further supplement their learning at home outside of the classroom.
#2 Does IXL create a bridge between school learning and everyday life experiences?
IXL creates a bridge between school learning and everyday experiences through its activities like Group Jams that allow students to collaborate with each other while solving the problems during the task. As one of the four C's of 21st Century Learning Skills, the ability to collaborate with others is an extremely vital experience for all students.
#3 Does IXL allow students to build skills that they can use in their everyday lives?
With its scoring system, IXL can be said to create resiliency in that students can feel accomplished when they achieve the SmartScore requirement. IXL also hones a student's ability to communicate with classmates through conversations during Group Jams.
Overall, IXL is an extremely beneficial, supplementary tool for student learning. It offers students the chance to practice their skills using technology over the pencil and paper method, but it could also afford to refurbish its scoring system to reduce math anxiety.
