My first FDC I made was for the 2023 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Stamp. In 2001, I was lucky enough to have RBG has a professor for a Summer Law Course.
The Art of the Envelope: Discovering the Art Cover Exchange (ACE)
The mail is more than just a way to send bills and letters. For members of the Art Cover Exchange (ACE), it is a blank canvas. This unique club brings together artists and stamp enthusiasts who transform ordinary envelopes—known in the philatelic world as "covers"—into miniature masterpieces. By blending artistic expression with the classic charm of a penpal network, ACE keeps the magic of hand-delivered mail alive.
A Tradition of Illustrated Mail
The Art Cover Exchange builds on a rich history of decorated mail that dates back to the 1930s. Historically, ACE members have illustrated envelopes to celebrate historic events, mark the first day of a new stamp issue, or simply amuse their friends. ACE formalized this passion into a structured community where members create, trade, and appreciate these small-scale works of art. The club was built on a simple premise: to share joy through the postal service, one envelope at a time.
Infinite Ways to Decorate a Cover
What makes an ACE cover so fascinating is that no two envelopes look alike. There is no single "correct" style, and members use a vast array of techniques to decorate their mailings.
Hand-Painted Covers: Many members use watercolors, acrylics, or gouache to paint vivid landscapes, portraits, or abstract designs directly onto the paper.
Pen and Ink Drawings: Fine-line sketching, cartooning, and intricate cross-hatching offer a classic, graphic look to the envelopes.
Colored and Shaded Art: Using colored pencils, markers, or pastels, artists add vibrant gradients and textures to their hand-drawn outlines.
Digital and Computer Prints: Some creators utilize graphic design software to manipulate photos or create digital art, printing their custom layouts directly onto the envelope.
Stickers and Rubber Stamps: Leveraging a massive variety of pre-made or hand-carved stamps and creative stickers allows members to build complex, repeated geometric patterns.
Mixed Media: Combining several techniques—such as pasting vintage paper collage alongside a painted background—creates layered, three-dimensional textures.
The Heart of the Club: Creative Penpals
At its core, ACE is not just about producing art; it is about building connections. The club operates with a strong penpal element. Members do not simply mail empty envelopes to anonymous addresses. They write letters, share life updates, swap stories, and build lasting friendships across the country.
Receiving an ACE cover means pulling a personalized, one-of-a-kind gallery piece straight out of a standard mailbox. In a fast-paced digital world, the Art Cover Exchange proves that taking the time to hand-craft a letter makes the world feel a little bit closer.

This well drawn ACE Dragon Cover is postmarked January 1, 1937. ACE #160, Alberta Gene Berryhill sent it to ACE #121, Roy Wolfe.
Gladys Adler was a prominent American philatelic artist and cachetmaker active from 1936 through the mid-1940s. Adler was widely known for her involvement with the Art Cover Exchange (ACE) as ACE 165. Adler used her talents in watercolor and ink, and created highly collectible, hand-painted envelopes.
This 1937 Adler hand painted cover is of particular interest because of the ACE postmark and ACE cachet. There is no record of the recipient being an ACE member, so this appears to be not an ACE club cover despite the ACE postmark and cachet.
This 1936 cover is from ACE 1 (Len Turley) to ACE 80 (Harper H. Worley). This cover was apparently sent from ACE 1 commemorating his last day as ACE president. This cover was sent on Leap Day (February 29).
