Letitia and Ann MATHEWS were the daughters of William MATHEWS and Mary Ann, who were living in Richmond Row in the first decade of the 19th Century.
In 1840, Daniel BELL was living in Greenside House and was listed on the electoral register.
Daniel was a hemp merchant, born in 1807 in St Bees, Cumberland to Quaker couple Joseph and Jane BELL. In 1835 he was living at 22 Stafford Street and had a counting house in Water Street, and in 1845 he had a warehouse in South Castle Street. He married Liverpool-born Ann MATHEWS at Walton, St Mary in 1838
In 1841 Daniel was living at Greenside House with his mother-in-law and sister-in-law: Mary Ann MATHEWS aged 60 and Letitia MATHEWS aged 35, both of independent means and born in Lancashire. There were also a number of servants living in – Ann KEGAN, Frances WRIGHT and Mary HOLMES. Frances and Mary were also not natives of Lancashire.
The tithe map of 1845 shows two houses on the plot, both owned by Daniel BELL. One was occupied by Daniel BELL himself; the adjoining house was occupied by Joseph DICKINSON.
Daniel was still living at Greenside House in 1851 with wife Ann, sister-in-law Letitia (described as a gentlewoman) and three house servants – Sidney GRIFFITHS (aged 29, born Caernarvon); Mary ? (aged 29, born Runcorn); Jane POOLE (aged 26, born Whitehaven) and a manservant from Woburn in Bedfordshire called John GREGORY. The house is between the Lamb Inn and the house of John Johnson ARMSTRONG (traveller for a brewer, landlord of the Lamb Inn by 1861) and then Lake Cottages.
Meanwhile, in March 1851, Mary Ann MATTHEWS, widow of the late William MATTHEWS, died at Greenside House, Wavertree.
Daniel BELL was something of philanthropist. In the early 1850s, he is recorded as making donations to Toxteth Park Hospital and Liverpool Northern Hospital. He was still living in Greenside House in 1854, as recorded in newspaper reports of donors to the Liverpool Northern Hospital.
Letitia died in 1858 and was buried at Holy Trinity, Wavertree. Daniel BELL is not listed in the 1860 Directory for Liverpool.
