There are several good online sources for researching near misses, close calls and line of duty deaths. I will include a table of specific reports that may be of interest to us or may include information for incidents that have occurred in our region. Here are some links so you can do research on your own or submit your own reports on near misses.
The National Firefighter Near Miss Reporting System was launched August 2005 at Fire Rescue International. At the time, it was a revolutionary idea: sharing near-misses to prevent future accidents and improve safety. Fire service thought-leaders came together to develop this system and promoted it to the fire service community over the last 10 years. Today, the concept is much more widely accepted. This doesn’t mean our work is done. Near-miss reporting is more important than ever to develop a national safety picture. Innovative training that focuses on root-causes continues to be imperative. This is why we’re building on this important program’s legacy and launching new solutions.
This site is also the home of the Secret List and was created by Billy Goldfeder. It's another good source of information. I would recommend getting on the email alert for the Secret List and to visit the site regularly to keep up with.
is an independent newsletter produced since 1998 by Chief Billy Goldfeder in an effort to bring forward the issues involving injury and death to us...often issues that are ignored, quickly forgotten or just not talked about.
TSL is e-mailed at no charge and produced as time allows. With the attitude that in order for us to survive the dangers of the job, they must learn how we have had "Close Calls" and even been injured or killed, TSL brings forward issues in an effort to enforce that philosophy-and get us to refocus on "what's important."
An important part of staying safe is to be aware of what is injuring and killing fellow firefighters. NIOSH Firefighter Fatality Reports are an in-depth look at the who, what, when, where and why of each fatality. If you are not doing everything right, this investigation will lay everything that was wrong on the line and show you what needs to be changed. If you have read any of these reports, you will see that nothing is off limits with the investigations and the findings can be very humbling.
Some of the table entries are files that have been loaded on our site and some will be links to another websites. This is a work in process so you should see additional entries. If you believe there are any reports that would be important to the Greenport Fire Department, please notify us and we will add it to our table.
