Triaconter

''Ancient Greek Ship'' 600 bc

Ancient Greek Boat

Type: Triaconter

History: The Triaconters was an early form of galley, which was oblong and flat. Their design was aimed at the fastest possible speed for steep maneuvers. These ships were equipped with a rectangular sail and additional rudders used at least since the Archaic era, but rather similar ships were previously used, taking into account the relevant references to Homeric epics.Prior to the Archaic period, Homer in his Iliad reported that during the Trojan War there were ships with various numbers of paddles

The Triaconters appeared at a time when there was no distinction between commercial and warships. They were flexible, long-range vessels, used for trade, piracy and war operations. They carried goods or even soldiers. The Triaconters was propelled by thirty (30) rowers who were placed per 15 on each side. In its middle mast, the square sail was also used to promote the ship when there was a favorable wind. The triacs were among the first ships equipped with a plunger on the bow. This indicates that the purpose of their construction was primarily war.
