As one of the assignments in the MA program, I was asked to look for a social need in the community. After a long time of reflection about the sources that are available on the internet, I found out there are few podcasts or courses about a topic that has a relevant and personal impact on me and that I have been dealing with all my life. I am talking about “curly hair”.
It is possible that many people would think that it is a topic with not too much importance for society, but it is when you possess this characteristic as one of your personal features.
When I started my research about “curly hair”, I found many anecdotes from other people with curls, and it was shocking to realize the huge number of stories of people who have been struggling with their hair, and even some of them began to hate their curls because they do not know how to take care about it and always looks “unhealthy” and/or “untidy”.
I decided to develop a course about curly hair needs, I thought, it will be useful for the audience because they will be able to find all the information about “the curly girl method” in just one place. It is important to mention the method was created and named by Loraine Massey around 10 years ago in her book "Curly Girl: The Handbook".
After conducting some surveys, I realized that most of the participants are not even aware of the existence of the method. For that reason, I think the course will be even more useful for all the audience who has no experience in hair care.
I considered including some podcasts in the course to complement the information delivery and benefit verbal learners and not just visual learners.
This artifact shows an initial podcast that I recorded as a proposal to deliver information on how to start the “curly girl method”. It has simple information and steps to start knowing some characteristics proper from curly hair.
To conclude, I would like to mention that with this artifact I developed professional skills for an instructional podcast, with the aim of reaching a specific audience and helping them to achieve a learning outcome about how to take care of their hair. I recorded and edited the audio using Audacity as my selected software, while I also try to adhere to principles of universal design for learning (UDL).
