For this project, I decided to modify a Visual aid from BBC news which is formed by 16-line graphs, each one with an inaccurate design and some factors that lead to data distortion (Tufte 2001 pp. 55- 59).
Covid-19 is an important topic nowadays with an enormous impact all over the world. Having clear information on how the number of cases is changing is important.
Consequently, the visual aid is faulty due to the difficulty that users experience when making a comparison of one line graph with another. As not all the information is given in the graphs, the data before each caption number is unreadable in the visual aid. For all these reasons, I consider that a table or a bar graph showing just the final numbers will communicate the data in a clearer way (Markel and Selber 2018 pp. 309-310).
Not only did I change the design of the visual aid, but I also reorganized the last 7 countries in an alphabetical order, which I believe is better when various countries have the same number of Covid cases (Markel and Selber 2018 p. 313).
One or another visual aid (table or bar graph) will work fine on their own, but in the end, I decided to use a bar graph in the design to give the users a better experience when reading the data, making it easier to understand and compare the report in a visual way.
The whole document provides three faulty visual aids found on the internet from various sources. All of them went through an editorial process before being published.
It is important to mention that in the document, a full-size image is provided so readers can visualize the graphics well. On the following page after each full-size image, I describe why I consider them “faulty” or “inadequate” graphics. In addition, a miniature of every visual aid accompanies each description.
At the end of the document, I express some of the changes and additions I made to improve one of the images, using what I have learned during the semester. To illustrate those changes, the suggested modifications are shown in a new visual aid (page 9 in the document).
I included this project in my e-portfolio because it shows the knowledge that I acquired in the semester about what makes a good and or a bad visual aid. In addition, it also shows the theoretical base that I contemplate for the redesign of the bad graphic.
