Qi Rita Pan

Hi there, my name is Qi Rita Pan. Instead of defining myself with labels like a "nearly 30-year-old single, female Ph.D.…”, I prefer to focus on the things that bring me happiness. For example, I love listening to beautiful music, watching captivating movies, reading interesting novels, and climbing high mountains.

However, nothing compares to the awe-inspiring experience I had while volunteering to teach in a village and gazing at the Milky Way's starry belt on a warm summer night. It’s so beautiful!! Unfortunately, this breathtaking scene is not easily found in the city. Nonetheless, during my fourth year of undergraduate studies, my desire to explore the unknown led me to the discovery of a new kind of “starry night” using a dark field microscope. Under the microscope, countless stars formed a graceful pattern that left me in a state of awe and wonder again!

Since then, my Ph.D. journey began at Tsinghua University, where I embarked on an incredible exploration of “the starry night” under various biochemical environments, including chemical catalysis, protein liquid-liquid phase separation, and electric fields. Later on, I joined Steve's group and delved into the fascinating world of enzymatic catalysis, which has offered a unique and exciting journey full of controversies and puzzles. Even now, I continue to see "the starry night" as I explore this field. Drawing inspiration from the words of Paulo Coelho in his book "The Alchemist," I am reminded that "When you want something, the whole universe conspires in order for you to achieve it." With each experiment, I hold the hope of getting closer to uncovering new knowledge and unlocking the mysteries of the universe.
