Momma let things go.
Now that is becoming me.
Will I have her end?
Visual poetry created with Language is a Virus
My haiku poem is titled Family Doom to capture how Serenity feels about her parents. She continues to come back to the thought that she is doomed to turn out like her momma. Her Momma let the abuse go and did not stand up to it. She then lied about Danny hurting her, just like her momma. She again wonders if she will have the same end result and turn out like her momma, her family.
I chose to create my visual poem as a continuous shape because of Serenity's continuous wondering in the book. She keeps coming back to that thought. The heart was created as a way to show the love that Momma had for Serenity, despite her staying with her abusive husband. The helix shape is to represent Serenity's tie to her mother that has doomed her to turn out just like her mother, her family. I chose the colors of grey and dark blue to represent the gloom of the situation.
I created a TikTok to bring awareness to Domestic Violence. Domestic violence occurs much more than people realize. While we cannot just end it, awareness can definitely help if we know how to help. We can learn to be upstanders instead of bystanders when we recognize the signs of domestic violence.
For my visual art, I created a word cloud. I chose words that could represent what Serenity feels or what is or has been important in her life. I chose a cross to be the shape because The Lord's Prayer on the cross plaque is what kept her calm when her mother died. She also used scripture many times to calm herself. Serenity has experienced many things throughout the book like tragedy and death. She also has experienced much more trivial things like romance and English class. These darker colors represent the overall tone of the book because of the events that take place.
