Letter of Recommendation

Do’s and Don’ts:

• DO: Ask Teachers, Advisors, Principals, Coaches, Counselors, Employers, and Pastors. Ensure you have the person’s permission before listing them as a recommender. 

• DO: Submit a brag sheet or resume of all the activities, awards, leadership camps, and community service you have done. This information assists the teacher in putting together your letter.  

• DO: Send your request early and give plenty of time to complete the Common App and letters. They must be uploaded by the person writing the letter 

• DO: Ask recommenders to give you a hard copy or email a copy for scholarships or other future applications. 

• DO NOT: Have family members or family friends write a letter unless there is a professional relationship. 

• DO NOT: Use High School reference letters after graduating from college. 

• DO: Once in college, you should ask for recommendation letters from your professors. An HS teacher cannot always speak to your current status. 

Step-by-Step Process: 

1. Select the GPA Staff Member. 

2. The hyperlink will open an email for you. 

3. Copy and paste the appropriate message below into your populated email.  

   1. For Internships and Jobs, or

   2. For Colleges, Universities, and Trade Programs 

4. Title the subject line: "Recommendation Letter Request".

5. Be sure to fill in the brackets [ ] with the appropriate information. 

***A Letter of Recommendation takes time to complete. Please allow 5 to 7 business days for the GPA staff to respond.***
If you don't get a response within that time, please send your request HERE. 

For Internships and Jobs
