In film, Gotham City has undergone a variety of interpretations. From the hyper-realism of the Nolan Dark Knight Trilogy, to the grim and gritty Gotham in Joker, to the Gothic tones of the recent Batman films. Given the location in Disneyland to Fantasyland's European architectural influences, imagineers decided to heavily inspire this Gotham City by the most recent films, with elements of previous iterations sprinkled throughout. This land, unlike the drawing board versions of Galaxy's Edge which never saw the light of day after the Lucasfilm purchase fell through in the Chaosverse, is a celebration of Batman, not set in a specific time period of Batman. Fans of both the new and old films, comics, and much more will find elements of their favorite Batman versions sprinkled throughout this land. The following films and comics are the most represented in the land aesthetically:
The Batman (2022)
The Batman: Sub-Zero (2025)
The Batman: Legacy (2028)
Joker (2019)
Batman Begins (2005)
Batman: The Animated Series (1992-1995)
The Long Halloween (Comic)
Year One (Comic)
(Other Assorted Batman Comics)
In the most recent Batman films, Gotham City is inspired by the designs of cities such as Glasgow, Liverpool, and more, which carry with it a Gothic aesthetic that makes Gotham City feel not only old, but provides a darker 'lived-in' setting. The monorail system throughout the land is inspired by the monorail in Batman Begins that connected the entire city together. Some other elements sprinkled in are inspired by the Bronx, NY and Newark, NJ - both represented in the Joker film as again lived-in cities that showcase Gotham's age and universality. Much like the 'lived-in' feeling of Adventureland in Disneyland, this land will have a very similar format in that the designs are not meant to 'pop' akin to Main Street or Fantasyland. The buildings themselves are meant to envelop you in this seedy underbelly of a city and engulf you in the world of the Batman.
The Gotham City Map below is decorated with an eclectic array of Batman Universe characters. The premise of the land is that Gotham is in a state of disarray where many villains have escaped Arkham and have taken over the city. Much like the rumored 'Villains Land' concept for several of the Disney Magic Kingdom parks, this is a villains land of Batman characters - meant to represent a 'darker' side of Fantasyland, with Batman himself and his technologies paralleling the advancements of Tomorrowland and the Marvel counterpart to the eccentric billionaire, Tony Stark.
As guests enter Gotham from either the south side via Tomorrowland or the west side via Fantasyland, they are immersed into the seedy underbelly of the city. Guests can venture to the 4 main attractions of the land or a variety of the restaurants and shops the city has to offer.
