As Gotham City in Disneyland was built upon the former Autopia, when designing the land the imagineers wanted to keep aspects of the original beloved Disneyland attraction. The team settled on reusing aspects of the Autopia track infused with upgraded slot car technology of Test Track, technology that at one point inspired the infamous Rocket Rods attraction.
The track of Autopia was repurposed to act as the 'underground' of Gotham City, driving through tunnels and sewers running underneath the city. This is where much of the attraction takes place, as Gotham itself was built on the '2nd level' of the park, elevated above the former Autopia with the monorail weaving in and out of the city structures. The premise of this attraction takes guests to the 'Batcave' as Bruce Wayne/Batman gets set out to stop The Penguin from unlocking chaos upon the already tumultuous cityscape.
The queue meanders through the Batcave, which shares space with the finale of the Mysteries of Wayne Manor attraction next door. Guests then take an elevator (that simulates going down several floors) to the 'Ground Floor' of Disneyland where the former Autopia used to queue. There guests continue to pass through caves and gaze at Batman's gadgets as they approach their vehicles. On Batman's radar observation, you see the Penguin causing chaos throughout the streets. Penguin himself even sends Batman video clips asking him to join them on the streets. Guests turn a corner as the Batmobiles begin to ignite.
Ride Vehicles
The new ride vehicles take the form of miniature Batmobiles, each of which hold four people. Despite what you may think given what this ride is replacing, these new vehicles are slot cars, removing the element of control and the gas smell of Autopia, in favor of a more thrill based experience.
Ride Through
The ride consists of several twists and turns, to try and recreate the feeling of driving down tight spaces and barely making corners, however the ride is connected with slower scenes and practical effects. Such scenes include The Penguin’s car driving away on a road next to you, & old structures collapsing (in reality parts are just being moved down but fog machines make it work).
The attraction concludes with an emulation of the explosion scene (mainly using lighting and smoke), and some wrap-up audio explaining what happens in the movie, designed in a “oh complete the story by checking out the rest of Gotham” way.
