In this hands-on, sensory-rich unit, middle school students will explore the intersection of culinary traditions, storytelling, and artistic expression. “Taste & Threads: The Art of Cooking” invites students to examine how food connects us to culture, identity, and creativity. From studying family recipes and community cookbooks to experimenting with plating, kitchen chemistry, and textile patterns inspired by meals, students will discover how cooking is both a science and an art form.
The unit culminates in a collaborative “Iron Chef Jr.” challenge where student teams present original dishes inspired by personal or cultural stories, paired with visual representations (illustrations, textile patterns, or wearable art) that reflect the essence of their culinary journey.
