iEARN - iEARN is an international organization that connects classes virtually around the world. Their platform is set up with various projects that all connect to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. There are projects for all ages and academic levels, such as learning about partner country’s culture to solutions to hunger. With the platform one can join scheduled groups that arrange partnerships or you can use the platform at your convenience to make your own connections.
This book, currently available for loan from the Genesee Elementary Library as well as available as in e-reader format, provides a wealth of ideas for opportunities to foster global competency in students. In addition to over fifty practical activities, there are chapters on infusing global learning into specific subject areas, while aligning with common core standards, technology tools that can be used to connect with the world, and service learning with a global focus.
This resource provides a step-by-step process for teachers who want to integrate global education into their classrooms! For teachers, they provide a lesson builder template that can be completed as they plan their unit. The site provides how to videos on how to use the template, model lessons from other teachers, and ideas for future lesson topics. For students, this is a great starting point to see what is going on in the world. With the countless videos and articles that can be found right on the home page, students will get first hand accounts of current global issues; as well as possible research ideas, topics, or questions.
The Peace Corp website allows teachers to search by grade level, regions and countries, resource type, and resource topic. A larger number of lessons are geared towards grade 6 and above, with over 140 lessons to choose from. These lessons range from book studies to simulations with a large focus on cross-cultural understanding. Educators are able sign up for a newsletter to keep up-to-date with Peace Corp lesson plans.
In 2015, world leaders committed to addressing seventeen goals to address three issues: end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and fix climate change. This website provides tools and lessons for classrooms and students to be part of this positive change.
Founded by two teachers in the 1980’s, Primary Source has grown to a membership service with many benefits available for free. Individual membership is negligible ($25). Of particular interest are the resource guides and curriculum ideas about many global topics. Also of interest are the live seminars on hot topics such as Global Read and Social Justice. An archive of all past seminars are on their YouTube page.
An organization born from the aftermath of 9-11, the founders wanted to create a conduit to help youth understand and act upon Global Issues. A nice collection of printable student tools and organizers are available as well. This website is primarily geared toward students in grades 6-12.
