Lifeguard Duties 7/3/10
You are responsible to read and know all the lifeguard duties and the procedures in the Pool Manual.
Pool Duties - AM
· Clean baby pool with skimmer. If very dirty, drain and refill. If refilling, do this right away, because it takes a while to drain and refill
· Empty skimmer baskets if needed.
· Skim surface with net EVERY day!
· Vacuum per schedule or more if needed.
· Empty pump strainer basket after every vacuum or when needed.
· Check chemicals and filter pressure.
· Backwash after every vacuum or when needed.
· Sweep area, pull weeds.
· Check toilet.
· Add water, if needed. Since we lose water on a daily basis (evaporation, backwashing, leaks in the pump house), it is good practice to add water every day.
· Make sure that the rope with the 4 floats is installed across the pool, which separates the deep end from the shallow end.
Pool Duties - PM
· Check chemicals and filter pressure at start of shift and end of shift.
· Add necessary chemicals.
· Put away balls and other pool toys and pick up area. (litter, sticks, Band-Aids, etc.)
· Close all of the umbrellas.
· Water plants
· Keep the pump motor on! We are leaving the pump running 24 / 7.
· Private parties are to take their own trash away!
Weekly Duties
· Once per week, a water sample needs to be taken to Pool Tech for testing.
· Once per week on Sunday evenings, a maintenance dose of Algaecide needs to be added to the pool.
o The Algaecide and measuring cup are on one of the shelves in the pool. Our pool is 70,000 gallons, so calculate the amount of Algaecide needed (with the current Algaecide, it’s a about 8 oz or 1 cup) and pour it into the measuring cup then pour it along the edge at the deep end of the pool. Make sure to rinse out the measuring cup well, the Algaecide really sticks to the sides.
· On Sunday evening perform Burnout.
· On Sunday evenings take out the trash and place it at the end of the driveway, on the left side (when facing 40th St. Dr). All of the garbage containers must have a Marion garbage sticker on them. Also take out any bags of yard waste. If there are empty chlorine containers, rinse them out and also take them out.
Reponsibilities
· Lifeguard is responsible for arriving on time to have the pool ready to open at the correct time (30 minutes before pool opens). Lifeguard is responsible for working their scheduled time. If you are unable to make it to your shift on time, it is your responsibility to find a Glencove guard replacement who can arrive on time.
o If the pool doesn’t open because of weather, the A.M. Guard is still required to show up and check / add chemicals sometime during their shift. Write down 1 hour for this.
· Lifeguard must keep an accurate time card.
· Guests must sign the guest log upon entering the pool area. Log is to be kept under the lifeguard chair or on the picnic table. (See directory rules.)
· You are responsible to maintain the proper chlorine level in the pool.
NEVER LET IT DROP BELOW 2.0!
· You are responsible to ensure that Burnout is done on Sunday night
· Once a week, one of the guards needs to take a water sample to Pool Tech for testing. Record the results and your time.
· Bleed air from filters after vacuuming and check later in the day. If there is air, the strainer lid needs tightening.
· Check filter pressure after vacuuming. If there is NO pressure, that means you left the inlet valves (vacuum, strainer, bottom) closed or there is air in the pump or the vacuum break has tripped. If the pressure is high (greater than 10 lbs.), you left the return valve closed or you need to backwash
· Always backwash when the pressure gets to 10 lbs. or higher and after vacuuming
· Keep the pump house neat. Put everything back in its place. This includes hanging up the hose and vacuum. Make sure the ends of the hose are not laying on the table so water doesn’t pool up on the table.
· Keep vines along the fence trimmed during down time
· Make sure water level stays up. Within 2 inches from the top of the skimmer opening (keep it within the black short lines)
· Garbage goes out EVERY Sunday night. All garbage cans get a tag, which are hanging up in the pumphouse. If the garbage cans are not full, combine them. Garbage cans go at the end of the drive on the left side. Also take out any yard waste bags and empty chlorine containers (rinse out the containers first). Monday morning guard is responsible for bringing the garbage cans back.
· NO swimming while on duty!! If you get hot, you can slip in and out of the pool to cool off.
· Drain the baby pool when it gets dirty. Make sure that you backwash after draining the baby pool. This will make sure that there is enough pressure to fill the baby pool more quickly.
· Always make sure the rope separating the shallow end from the deep end is installed.
· Guards must have a whistle and USE it as needed.
· Review, understand, and enforce rules and policies in Glencove Directory and Website
· If you are scheduled to work and current weather necessitates closing the pool, please remain available during your shift to open the pool in the event that the weather becomes suitable. If there is any sign of lightning or threatening weather, get everyone out of the water immediately and close the pool if necessary. Again, remain available during your shift. Iowa weather changes quickly. Pool rules state that the temperature must be 70 degrees to open the pool. Please use common sense with enforcing this rule. If it is a bright, sunny day and the temperature is 68 degrees, open the pool. If closing the pool please notify a board member so that an announcement can be made to members.
· Vacuum at least every other day for 20-30 minutes.
· Check chemicals and temperature, complete "Pool Maintenance Daily Checklist" - record morning, start of 2nd shift and evening when closing at the pool edge.
· Lifeguard must be in the lifeguard chair if people are in the baby pool. You may sit at the pool edge if people are in the big pool and nobody is in the baby pool. Safety is the main concern. Refrain from socializing while on the job. Lifeguards are present to avoid injuries and, if necessary, to save lives.
· Fill out an "Incident Report Form" for any episode involving any injuries. These are located in the back on the Pool Manual Book.
· Deal with infractions immediately. Use the following procedures:
· First offense - warning: blow your whistle and explain the problem.
· Second offense - warning: blow your whistle, require person(s) to sit out for ten minutes.
· Third offense - evict swimmer(s) for the day.
· After an eviction, please notify lifeguard chairperson of the situation.
· Please be firm and polite in the performance of your duties. It is NOT your responsibility to argue with anyone about policies or procedures. Politely say, "I'm sorry that you disagree. If you have a complaint, please contact the lifeguard chairman. I need to keep my attention on the pool."
· The guard must first clear the pool for a short break if he/she needs to use the restroom, go into the pump house or otherwise take a break.
· Guards are not permitted to bring guests into the pool area while on duty.
· During normal pool hours, radios and other sound equipment using external speakers will not be allowed in the pool area. The pool provides a radio and on-duty lifeguard controls it. Keep volume to a minimum.
· Heater should be kept at 81-82 degrees.
· Floating divider line must be installed at all times. It may be temporarily removed when giving a swimming test.
· All children 14 or under must pass the swimming test before entering the deep end.
· The swimmer must swim all the way from the shallow end to the deep end and then back without touching the side or the bottom. The swimmer may take a 30 second break at the deep end before swimming back to the shallow end. The swimmer may only swim on their back for ¼ of the total distance (1/2 of one length).
· Parties will be scheduled and payment made through the lifeguard chairperson. Guards are not responsible for making party reservations
· If no one is in the pool, please use your time wisely for the improvement of the pool area; such as cleaning the pool edge with “Off the Wall”, hosing down the deck, pulling weeds, etc.
· Keep a family pool atmosphere; no wild behavior, hogging chairs, bad language, intimidating behavior, no hanging on basketball rim. Let people have lap swims. Diving is to be only 1 on the board at a time - diving straight off only. (No dives turning back toward the diving board.) Members and guests are to pick up after themselves. Do not allow garbage to be left laying around.
· All laws of the State of Iowa must be obeyed. This includes "No Smoking or Drinking of Alcohol by Minors". You have the right to ask to see identification of any person wishing to smoke or drink alcoholic beverages.
· Any illegal or dangerous behavior may be reported immediately to the authorities by calling 911. Follow up with immediate reporting to the lifeguard chairperson.
Restock refrigerator as needed.
· Lock gates, pumphouse, chemical box, refrigerator / freezer and ice cream freezer at closing time.
REGARDING ADMITTANCE TO POOL AREA:
Each household must have their pool pass for the current year. No member or houseguest will be allowed to stay in pool area until they are in possession of their pool pass. Pool passes MUST be checked on every person.
Guests (excluding houseguests) must be accompanied at all time by a member. Lifeguards will require guests to sign in. Members are asked to facilitate this process.
Children, 4 years of age and under, are not allowed inside the pool fence without adult supervision. (18 years or older)
