Conservation

"Las interacciones entre especies son el principal proceso por el que se sostienen los ecosistemas naturales y, aunque son difíciles de cuantificar, deberían ser el centro de los esfuerzos de conservación" (G.M. 2018)

"Species interactions are the main process by which natural ecosystems are sustained, and although difficult to quantify, they should be the focus of conservation efforts" (G.M. 2018)

Help knowledge to spread

As the complexity of natural systems is understood, it becomes clearer that the loss of diversity is not just the disappearance of one species after another but also the loss of interactions between species. These interactions are likely to be more susceptible to human pressures, and the linkages between species may be so specialized that co-extinctions occur.

It is essential to keep moving forward in the path of preserving natural environments. However, taking action for conservation can lead to the uneasiness of feeling that you can't fight them when you are alone. That's why I try to embrace a cooperative view of humanity and put my conservation efforts into interacting with other communities and transmitting all the knowledge I can generate from my small place. I firmly believe that if knowledge is not transmitted, it does not fulfill its purpose of being knowledge.

What do I do to contribute to conservation?

I write for a science divulgation magazine about the birds of northwestern Argentina.

The magazine was conceived and designed by naturalists, and it presents information about the environment, insects, and birds.

It is an educational proposal aimed at teachers, children, and teenagers. As such, it includes games, tales, music, poems, and educational activities on the field.

Cultural interchange

Together with Operation Wallacea and the research team working on Sani Reserve in 2022, we organized a presentation for cultural interchange with the local community in Sani Isla.

Work in conservation projects (Trabajar en proyectos de conservación)

A huge part of conservation is to cooperate with other researchers together with the local communities that help to preserve the world we, as humans, inhabit.

Ecuador

In 2019 and 2022, I was lucky enough to be part of the Operation Wallacea (Opwall) team working in Ecuador.

Operation Wallacea is a biodiversity and climate research organisation (https://www.opwall.com/). As part of its work, it runs biodiversity field expeditions with a strong basis in interacting with local communities and making them part of the fieldwork and decisions on what information they would like us to generate that can help and contribute to the community.

Argentina

In 2022 I met the team of Seamos Bosques (https://www.seamosbosques.com.ar), an NGO based in Tucuman province with the goal of restoring the natural environment in a remaining portion of Austral Yungas Foothill forest. I am studying bird diversity and seasonality in the reserve while generating audiovisual documents that help them spread their voice on conservation. So far, the project have 182 bird species that encompass endemic bird species and new species records for the province.

Collaborate with citizen-science projects (Colaborar con proyectos de ciencia ciudadana)

eBird is a platform for real-time data collection to understand population trends and bird species distribution created by Cornell University

From 2018 to the present, I have collaborated with the project by reviewing the observations uploaded to the platform for Salta and Tucuman provinces, Argentina.

Collaborate with colleagues to raise awareness of the importance of Ecotourism in conservation (Colaborar con colegas para resaltar la importancia del Ecoturismo en la conservación)

I have collaborated with a team of researchers and conservationists from Brazil to raise awareness about how Ecotourism can connect countries, local communities, and nature lovers to preserve environments across southern Latin America. Together we have published a work delineating the Bioceanic route for ecotourism from Brazil to Chile. After the publication of the work, the enthusiastic team from Brazil did the proposed route by car with a short stop to visit friends and share good birding.
