What is a mixed-species bird flock?
They can be defined as a multi-species roving group in which participants may be able to obtain benefits. Mixed flocks of birds are probably the most complex social organization within birds by virtue of their interspecific composition and the large number of individuals involved.
They are variable in occurrence, composition, and organization among different geographic areas. Mixed flocks can be considered information centers, where their participant birds find food and avoid predators more easily than alone.
Some mixed flocks have a complex social structure, with some species defending common territories against conspecifics and others that join during their migration. Likewise, some species seem to be key for the formation and/or maintenance of mixed flocks, usually known as "nuclear species", whilst others join these key species, known as "follower species".
