Monster Study Guides that nobody fills out till after they are due just don't do it for me. Here are my best ideas compiled for use with ANY novel to get kids thinking, interacting and creating from what they read each day and give an instructor a sense of where to go next.

Golden Line
Purpose: Get readers thinking! Identify the "golden line" in a text and explain WHY that line.
Process: Set expectation that each student will read for a defined period of time or length of passage. While reading, students are looking for that line that cannot be ignored, what resonates with them AND why. Fill out the form. Viola! Starter discussion for the next class period!

Motivational Poster Vocab
Purpose: Create a visual for vocabulary of any kind.
Process: Student selects a troublesome or otherwise unknown vocabulary word from a passage to research and learn and teach through the visual they create thereby creating a new memory for themselves and a connection to the word!

Conflict Day
Purpose: Introduce, reinforce, or summarize types of conflict.
Process: Student are to watch for kinds of conflict as they read for the day. Identify the types they see, who is involved, how it moves the novel forward and effects characters and relationships

Purpose: Similar to the Golden Line above this quote should be something said by a character that gives insight into what make them tick. Collect them as you go through a novel for use in analysis at the end.
Process: Read, collect three quotes (or more depending on length of novel and desired end result) in the slide provided. Analyze at will upon completion of novel.

Get Social with your Novel
Purpose:

Purpose: Interpret, reflect, make inferences, bring to modern day the characters of your novel by suggesting song(s) for a playlist.
Process: Student suggest and give rationale for a song or songs for a character's playlist. Title, Artist, length, album and even audio/video links supplied by readers.
