For my final hurrah of Hutchins, the Senior Capstone project, I chose a direct attack on the Mental Health services of my own University. Through close research, analysis, surveys, and interviews, I concluded that CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) at Sonoma State is not a reliable form of support for students and should not be included in tuition costs.
In response, I created a website (TakeCare) that provides a guide of outside resources for college students seeking mental or emotional support. Throughout the website, students will find an organized array of links to a variety of affordable, online counseling plans with additional info such as accurate monthly pricing and thorough service descriptions. Each link takes the student directly to the plan's initial intake survey, in which afterwards they will begin to receive personalized care.
Behind the success story of becoming a college graduate, my time at Sonoma State was excruciating. I experienced my first loss, heartbreak, sexual assault, suicide, etc. These topics are not easy to talk about nor experience, yet are unfortunately common amongst college students.
But having proper, affordable resources, and more importantly knowing you're not alone, is the key to making it through college amongst the madness. My hopes are for this project to serve as a source of support for my peers, and an inspiration for others to make a difference in their community.
