COMPETENCE BASED CURRICULUM, PEDAGOGY AND INCLUSSIVE EDUCATION
Competence based learning means child centered approach to teaching and an enhanced role for teachers as they become evaluators of their own teaching. Hattie asserts that visible learning and teaching occurs when teachers see learning through the eyes of learner and help them become their own teachers. It entails making student learning visible to teachers so that they can know whether they are having an impact on this learning, this is an important component of becoming a lifelong learner. This resonates with the Sustainable Development Goals. I aspire to be in the forefront with workable ideas that primarily aim at enriching the learning experiences of each child. When the teaching and learning is activity oriented, the learner knows what to do and how to do it. When the learning is competence based, the teacher knows if learning is occurring or not. Teaching and learning are visible everyone is fulfilled with their input. Furthermore, both the teacher and the student work together to attain the goal, provide feedback, and ascertain whether the student has attained the
Competency based learning provides directions on the nature of engagement in the learning process between the teacher, the learner and the environment. It also provides a basis for designing a formative and evidence-based assessment, which is the bedrock of a competency-based curriculum. Gardner’s theory grew out of constructivism. It states that learners possess different kinds of minds and therefore learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways. He argues that we are all able to know the world through language, logical-mathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, and use of the body to solve problems or to make things, an understanding of other individuals, and an understanding of ourselves. Recognizing this enables learners to leverage their strengths and purposively target and develop their weaknesses. Pedagogical approaches under this theory emphasize the importance of a learner centered classroom, self-directed learning and delivery of instruction through multiple approaches.
The broad spectrum of learners would be better served if disciplines could be presented in a number of ways and learning could be assessed through a variety of means. Evidence based assessment that is aligned to a learner’s competencies can be a better used within Gardner’s multiple intelligences theory.
